DESCRIPTION:What: Aquatic insect ecology workshop with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams.When: Course runs May 13 through 16\, 2024; Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on May 16.Where: Laurel Community Center\, 4100 NC 212 Highway\, Marshall\, NC 28753. \n\n\n\nAquatic Insect Ecology Workshop\n\n\n\nAquatic insects (benthic macroinvertebrates) play key roles in many regulatory water quality programs in North Carolina and the Southeast. These insects have been used by regulatory agencies to assess water pollution and trends in stream health since the mid-1970s. Many metrics have been developed to make the use of these data effective and understandable to non-biologists.  \n\n\n\nBenthic insects are proposed as tools for the determination of stream restoration effectiveness and project prioritization by regulatory agencies. Despite the value of this group of organisms in regulatory programs\, very little is generally known about these insects as valuable regulatory tools. The course covers the natural history and taxonomy of mayflies (Ephemeroptera)\, stoneflies (Plecoptera)\, and caddisflies (Trichoptera)\, including systematics\, ecology\, and behavior of larvae and adults\, with emphasis on those aspects important in ecological studies\, biological monitoring of water quality\, and sports fishing.
