SUMMARY:Fish Identification Certification Beta Exam
DESCRIPTION:Brook trout\, Schuylkill Highlands\, Pennsylvania. Photo: Jeremy Monroe\, Freshwaters Illustrated\n\n\n\nQualified Professionals Invited to Take the SFS Pilot Exam This Spring and Get Certified\n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center is offering a pilot (beta) test of the Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) Fish Identification Certification exam and is seeking qualified professionals to participate this spring. \n\n\n\nThis certification recognizes advanced knowledge of regional fish species and supports high standards in fisheries and aquatic science. Through the Taxonomic Certification Program\, the Stroud Center works with SFS to strengthen scientific rigor by advancing certified taxonomic expertise. Accurate species identification underpins credible ecological data\, regulatory decisions\, and effective freshwater management. \n\n\n\nIndividuals who pass the beta exam will earn a two-year certification. \n\n\n\nBeta Exam Details\n\n\n\n\nStates covered: Maryland\, Pennsylvania\, West Virginia\, Delaware\, and Virginia\n\n\n\nExam format: 50 questions\n\n\n\nTime limit: 3 hours\n\n\n\nPassing score: 47 out of 50 (94%)\n\n\n\nSpecies study lists\n\n\n\n\nThis beta phase will allow the Stroud Center to validate exam delivery\, timing\, and question clarity while maintaining rigorous scientific standards. \n\n\n\nUpcoming Beta Exam Opportunities\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAFS Conference – PA Chapter Meeting\n\n\n\nBucknell UniversityMarch 13 at 9 a.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAMAAB Conference\n\n\n\nCacapon State Park\, Berkeley Springs\, WVMarch 24 at 6 p.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSociety for Freshwater Science Annual MeetingSpokane\, WA\n\n\n\nMay 18 (time TBD) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn addition to this pilot fish certification\, the Stroud Center offers a full suite of established SFS certification exams. Learn more about currently available certifications. \n\n\n\nInterested in Participating?\n\n\n\nWe are seeking experienced professionals who are confident in their regional fish identification skills and committed to advancing scientific standards in freshwater research and monitoring. \n\n\n\nReserve your seat today by contacting Michael Broomall (tcp@stroudcenter.org) and indicating your preferred exam location. \n\n\n\nSpace may be limited at each meeting. SUMMARY:Taxonomic Certification Opportunity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:What: Intensive two-week course with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams.\n\n\n\nWhen: Session 1 runs from June 22 to July 3\, 2026. Session 2 runs from July 6 to 17\, 2026. Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on July 3 and 17.\n\n\n\nWhere: Highlands Biological Station in Highlands\, North Carolina.\n\n\n\n\nThis immersive\, two-week course provides a comprehensive introduction to the natural history\, evolution\, and taxonomy of the three major aquatic insect orders used in freshwater bioassessment: mayflies (Ephemeroptera)\, stoneflies (Plecoptera)\, and caddisflies (Trichoptera). Through a combination of field excursions to Appalachian mountain streams and focused laboratory identification sessions\, students will develop the skills needed to recognize EPT larvae — typically to at least the genus level — and adults to the family level. \n\n\n\nStudents may opt to take the Society for Freshwater Science’s Taxonomic Certification exam of eastern EPT to genus at the end of the course. \n\n\n\n\nCourse Information\n\n\n\n\nIf you would like to take an exam at this event\, please fill out the Taxonomic Certification Exam Interest Form*.
