SUMMARY:Algae\, Algae\, Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Harmful Algal Bloom in the western basin of Lake Erie on September 25\, 2017. Photo: Aerial Associates Photography\, Inc. by Zachary Haslick\, public domain\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Monday\, June 10\, 2024. Doors open at 6 p.m. for light refreshments. The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. Please RSVP so we can plan for refreshments.\n\n\n\n\nThis event has passed. To be notified of upcoming events\, please subscribe to our freshwater e-news. \n\n\n\nLaura Johnson\, Ph.D.\, will explain the causes of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie\, why we need to be concerned about these blooms\, and what we should do to prevent exposure to bloom toxins. In addition\, we will examine:  \n\n\n\n\nHow scientists forecast bloom severity in Lake Erie. \n\n\n\nHow activity on land has resulted in changes in the water quality of Lake Erie tributaries that feed these blooms.\n\n\n\nWhat actions are being taken to improve water quality.\n\n\n\nWhat individuals can do to help.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Laura JohnsonLaura Johnson is director of the National Center for Water Quality Research at Heidelberg University\, which is known for its long-term monitoring of streams and rivers throughout the region. Results from this monitoring are used to forecast the algal blooms in Lake Erie\, assess the primary sources of nutrient and sediment pollution in Ohio’s watersheds\, and track the success of various land management strategies. The center is also monitoring an innovative pilot watershed approach to assess conservation practices in the headwaters of the Blanchard River and a portion of the wetlands in the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program. Under her guidance since 2016\, the lab continues to set the gold standard for research in nonpoint source pollution in watersheds.

Lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: The Meetinghouse at Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Rd.\, Avondale\, PA 19311\n\n\n\nCost: Free\, thanks to our sponsor Lael Farm\, but you must RSVP to attend.\n\n\n\nIn-person and virtual options available.\n\n\n\nCo-hosted by Stroud Water Research Center and Penn Vet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-person seats are full! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecent headlines about global insect declines and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. To create landscapes that enhance local ecosystems rather than degrade them\, we must: \n\n\n\n\nRemove invasive species from our properties.\n\n\n\nAdd the native plant communities that sustain food webs\, sequester carbon\, maintain diverse native bee communities\, and manage our watersheds.\n\n\n\n\nIf we do this in half of the area now in lawn\, we can create a Homegrown National Park\, a 20 million-acre network of viable habitats that will provide vital corridors connecting the few natural areas that remain. This approach to conservation empowers everyone to play a significant role in the future of the natural world. \n\n\n\nPhoto: Rob Cardillo\n\n\n\nDoug Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. He has authored 106 research publications and taught insect-related courses for 41 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. \n\n\n\nHis books include “Bringing Nature Home\,” “The Living Landscape\,” co-authored with Rick Darke\, “Nature’s Best Hope\,” a New York Times Best Seller\, and “The Nature of Oaks\,” winner of the American Horticultural Society’s 2022 book award. In 2021 he co-founded Homegrown National Park with Michelle Alfandari. His awards include recognition from The Garden Writers Association\, Audubon\, The National Wildlife Federation\, Allegheny College\, The Garden Club of America\, and The American Horticultural Association. \n\n\n\nQuestions about this event? The overuse of water and associated drying of rivers\, lakes\, and aquifers has become a leading cause of freshwater species imperilment. Climate change forecasts foretell even greater challenges in many water-scarce regions. These threats to our water future can be ameliorated\, but it will require bold and concerted action on the part of governments\, city leaders\, and farmers. This presentation will highlight the key solutions that must be implemented. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrian Richter has been a global leader in water science and conservation for more than 30 years. He is the president of Sustainable Waters\, a global water education organization\, where he promotes sustainable water use and management with governments\, corporations\, universities\, and local communities. He previously served as Managing Director for the Global Water Program of The Nature Conservancy\, an international conservation organization. Brian has consulted on more than 150 water projects worldwide. He serves as a water advisor to some of the world’s largest corporations\, investment banks\, and the United Nations\, and has testified before the U.S. Congress on multiple occasions. He also teaches a course on Water Sustainability at the University of Virginia.

SUMMARY:Penn State Water Insights Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Penn State Environment and Natural Resources Institute \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, March 20 at 12 p.m.Where: Room 102\, Forest Resources Building\, University Park\, PA\, or online using Zoom. Lunch will be provided to those who attend in person. \n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center associate scientist\, Melinda Daniels\, Ph.D.\, will present the next Penn State Water Insights Seminar. \n\n\n\n\nWatershed restoration has always presented an opportunity for addressing both ecological and human resiliency concerns\, yet quantifying and communicating the connections between the two has been challenging. This has resulted in segmented\, piecemeal restoration funding with limited ecological or human resiliency benefits. We appear to be in a phase of opportunity to produce larger\, connected\, holistic watershed restoration with clear and quantifiable improvements in both human and ecological resiliency. In this session we showcase a demonstration watershed restoration effort funded following Hurricane Sandy that employs multiple in-channel\, floodplain\, and hillslope strategies to restore hydrologic and water quality function to a headwater tributary of the Brandywine Creek watershed with dual goals of human and ecological resiliency to large magnitude disturbance events as well as persistent climate and land use change pressures. \n\n\n\n\nView the list of seminars in this series and links to recordings of past seminars
