SUMMARY:[EXTENDED] Winter Salt Snapshot 2026
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership\n\n\n\nDue to weather conditions\, the sampling window has been extended through March 25. Stroud Water Research Center recommends that snapshot participants delay stream sampling until conditions improve. Many small streams across our region are frozen with icy banks. Parking on side roads is also difficult in many areas. If your group has already collected samples\, please proceed with analysis and data entry in the online data sheet. Please note that we will continue to accept data to allow groups to sample based on their own situations and needs. Questions? Contact David Bressler. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn January 30 (extended)\, organizations throughout the Delaware River watershed and beyond will host stream sampling events. Community scientists and volunteers will collect chloride and conductivity data for a Winter Salt Snapshot during Winter Salt Week. Due to weather conditions\, the sampling window has been extended through March 25. \n\n\n\nThis stream and river monitoring event provides participants with local salt pollution data and information they can use to educate and engage municipal governments\, local leaders\, and the public. Stroud Center scientists will use the snapshot data to produce a high-resolution map of salt concentrations in regional streams. \n\n\n\nThe Stroud Center will provide support\, resources\, and regular email updates to registered snapshot participants. All resources will be made easily accessible as online folders and files. \n\n\n\n\nLearn About Road Salt Pollution\n\n\n\n\nResources\n\n\n\n\nComprehensive guidance document.\n\n\n\n2026 Resources for Winter Salt Snapshot Event Organizers (includes the guidance document\, snapshot data sheet\, and communication materials such as email\, social media\, and media templates).\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Fall Salt Pollution Stream Snapshot
DESCRIPTION:Tookany/Tacony-Frankford (TTF) Watershed Partnership Upstream Conservation Leader Ryan Neuman\, along with volunteers Geoffrey Selling\, Ethan Simon\, Richard Getz\, and Patricia Hendrick-Emore\, participated in 2025 Winter Salt Week to monitor the impact of road salt on local waterways. With support from Stroud Water Research Center\, the team collected data on chloride and conductivity levels on Rock Creek and Baeder Creek\, two major tributaries to the Tookany. Photos: Wendi Lu\, TTF Watershed Partnership on Flickr.\n\n\n\nWant to Get Involved in Community Science? \n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center is planning a community science stream monitoring event this fall. Water sampling will assess salt pollution levels and patterns in streams and rivers\, helping researchers and community members better understand how road salt accumulates across different landscapes.  \n\n\n\nThe intention for this fall event will be to sample during baseflow conditions when water levels are stable and not influenced by storm runoff (i.e.\, when the water in the stream is originating from groundwater/water table) within a two-week sample window (October 1–15). \n\n\n\nThe salt snapshot provides a unique\, hands-on opportunity to generate data illustrating that road salt contaminates our watersheds year-round. This data will help start local conversations and shine a public spotlight on this critical water quality issue. The level of road salt contamination highly depends on how much road salt private applicators and municipalities use and how they handle it. Therefore\, local data are a vital part of the conversation.   \n\n\n\nTo get involved: \n\n\n\n\nReview the introductory email about the fall salt snapshot.\n\n\n\nReview the snapshot guidance document.\n\n\n\nRefer to the above documents and others in the 2025 Fall Snapshot Resources for Event Organizers folder.\n\n\n\nRegister with a watershed group to participate. All are welcome.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Participate\n\n\n\nRequest Supplies\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Please get in touch with Community Science Facilitator David Bressler at dbressler@stroudcenter.org.  \n\n\n\nLearn More\n\n\n\n\nDiscover how road salt is polluting fresh water.\n\n\n\nRead the recap of our winter salt snapshot\, “Winter Salt Week Unites Those Concerned About Fresh Water.”\n\n\n\nView the data on a winter salt map.

SUMMARY:Food\, Flora\, and Fun at Lancaster’s Native Plant and Wildlife Festival
DESCRIPTION:Need Garden Inspo\, or Just Want to Enjoy Nature? \n\n\n\nJoin US at Lancaster’s Native Plant and Wildlife Festival for Food\, Flora\, and Fun!\n\n\n\n\nWhen: April 30\, 2022 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: Overlook Community Campus\, across from the Manheim Township Public Library\, 595 Granite Run Drive\, Lancaster\, Pa.\n\n\n\nWhat: Meet native plant vendors\, enjoy food truck fare\, hear environmental lectures\, and see an exciting new nature project using native plants to restore and protect a nearby stream.\n\n\n\n\nThe annual Lancaster Native Plant and Wildlife Festival is a time to learn about\, celebrate\, and protect our local environment using native plants. Native flowering plants\, shrubs\, and trees are those that originated and developed in our region\, unlike species introduced from other parts of the world. Think goldenrod\, winterberry\, and sycamore versus purple loosestrife\, barberry\, and callery pear. Native plants are important not only for local wildlife\, they are critical to restoring our streams and rivers\, and all the critters that call our waterways home.   \n\n\n\nJohn Williamson of TeamAg\, Inc.\, plants a sycamore seedling in the Overlook Park forest buffer. TeamAg works with the Stroud Center on dozens of farm conservation projects each year. Photo: Lancaster Clean Water Partners\n\n\n\nNew to this year’s festival is an 8-acre native habitat restoration area at Overlook Park in Manheim Township featuring trees\, shrubs\, and flowers that enhance nearby wetlands and a small stream that flows to the Little Conestoga Creek. Developed by Stroud Water Research Center\, Manheim Township\, the Alliance for the Chesapeake\, Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, Lancaster Clean Water Partners\, and many other partners\, this project is part of a countywide campaign to protect clean fresh water by planting over 1 million trees and shrubs on 6\,000 acres of streamside areas on farms\, parks\, and residential and business areas throughout the county.  \n\n\n\nLamonte Garber\, the Stroud Center’s watershed restoration coordinator\, will give a tour of the project to visitors who attend the festival. \n\n\n\nMark your calendar for Saturday\, April 30\, and we will see you there! \n\n\n\nVolunteer to Care for Native PlantsYou can help us nurture the new plants at Overlook Park. Register for the Stream Care Workday on June 4\, part of Lancaster Water Week. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Overlook ParkOverlook Park is a community public space that hosts hundreds of visitors every day\, many of whom walk\, bike\, or drive to enjoy this natural setting just north of Lancaster City. As such\, this young streamside forest is a place where visitors can enjoy nature and see firsthand how these streamside plantings are reducing pollution\, creating stream habitat\, and feeding and sheltering wildlife and pollinators.
