SUMMARY:[POSTPONED] Salt Pollution Water Testing Event in Harrisburg
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesday\, March 25\, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: The Rotunda at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex\, N. 6th St. & Reily St.\, Harrisburg\, PA 17120.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.\n\n\n\n\nThis event has been postponed until fall 2026. To be notified of the new date\, subscribe to our e-news. \n\n\n\nIs Your Local Stream Getting Salty?\n\n\n\nSalt keeps us safe on icy roads — but it’s also quietly harming waterways. Every winter\, millions of tons of salt are spread on roads\, sidewalks\, and driveways to combat snow and ice. While it’s effective at reducing slippery conditions\, the consequences for freshwater ecosystems\, infrastructure\, and drinking water are profound\, especially as winter salt use has risen dramatically over the past 50 years. \n\n\n\nPhoto: Ad Meskens\, CC BY-SA 3.0\, via Wikimedia Commons\n\n\n\nIf you live in the Harrisburg area and are worried about salt pollution in your local stream\, collect a water sample and bring it to the testing event. Volunteers will test it for chloride and conductivity\, and Stroud Water Research Center scientists will add the data to the interactive salt map at stroudcenter.info/saltmap. \n\n\n\nGet Your Streamwater Tested\n\n\n\n\nDownload and print the salt snapshot sample data sheet. (This is optional\, but will expedite testing at the event.)\n\n\n\nWhile at your sample site\, record the location as precisely as possible by dropping a pin in a mapping app on your phone.\n\n\n\nCollect about two cups of water in a clean container for each sample.\n\n\n\nFill out the data form with your sample information. \n\n\n\nBring your samples and data form to the event for analysis.\n\n\n\n\nRSVPs are appreciated but not required. SUMMARY:Expanding Meaningful Environmental and Watershed Literacy With Geospatial Technology Tools and Practice
DESCRIPTION:What: Seven-week professional development series. \n\n\n\nWho: K–12 formal and nonformal educators.\n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesdays from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on March 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\, 31; April 7 and 14\, 2026. Classroom implementation\, reflections\, and final survey due May 22\, 2026.   \n\n\n\nWhere: Synchronous online learning via Zoom. \n\n\n\nCost: Free for all participants. Pennsylvania state-certified K–12 teachers are eligible for up to 30 hours of Act 48. Pennsylvania formal and nonformal K–12 educators may also be eligible for a stipend.\n\n\n\nRegistration closes on Monday\, March 2\, 2026 at 5 p.m. Space is limited\, and enrollment will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis.\n\n\n\nAll assignments and surveys must be submitted by Friday\, May 22\, 2026 to be eligible for stipend payment. A post-implementation survey must be completed before the distribution of Act 48 hours or participation certificates.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for this event has closed. \n\n\n\nHave you been searching for the missing link that helps bridge the gap between delivering environmental content and developing environmental literacy? Do you want to help your students understand their connections to their local environment but are limited by established curriculum sequences? Have residual COVID-19 restrictions on classroom\, lab\, and field experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations using the environment as an integrative concept? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies\, participants will explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena and environmental issues in their local watersheds\, while using examples from the Great Lakes Basin to provide a shared learning context. This place-based methodology has been demonstrated as a highly effective strategy for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\n\n\n\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\n\n\n\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nInvestigate environmental issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n\n\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices. \n\n\n\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments. SUMMARY:[UPDATED] Salt Pollution Water Testing Event in West Chester
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Tim Smith\n\n\n\nUpdate: Due to severe cold\, hazardous ice and snow cover\, and related logistical obstacles that make it difficult to collect water samples safely\, Stroud Water Research Center recommends that participants delay stream sampling until conditions improve. Many small streams across our region are frozen with icy banks. Parking on side roads is also difficult in many areas. If you have already collected samples\, you may bring them to Borough Hall between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. (Note that this is an earlier end time.) We’d love to see you. We’ll analyze the samples and upload the data. We won’t be able to hold the demonstrations and displays as originally planned. We’ll simply be testing water samples. If you haven’t collected samples yet\, please wait until conditions improve. Conditions are challenging and\, in many cases\, unsafe. The data portal will remain open. We’d be happy to make arrangements to test any samples you collect at a later date. \n\n\n\n\nWhen: Friday\, January 30\, 2026\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Borough Hall\, 401 E. Gay St.\, West Chester\, PA 19380.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.\n\n\n\n\nIs Your Local Stream Getting Salty?\n\n\n\nSalt keeps us safe on icy roads — but it’s also quietly harming waterways. \n\n\n\nIf you live in the West Chester area and are worried about salt pollution in your local stream\, collect a water sample and bring it to the testing event. (This is optional\, but will expedite testing at the event.)\n\n\n\nWhile at your sample site\, record the location as precisely as possible by dropping a pin in a mapping app on your phone.\n\n\n\nCollect about two cups of water in a clean container for each sample.\n\n\n\nFill out the data form with your sample information.\n\n\n\nBring your samples and data form to the West Chester Borough Hall between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday\, January 30.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Email communications@stroudcenter.org. \n\n\n\n\nLearn More

SUMMARY:2025 Fall Salt Stream Snapshot Wrap-Up
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Valley Forge Trout Unlimited\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, November 19\, 2025. Doors open at 6 p.m. for light refreshments. Registration is required and will close at noon on November 19.\n\n\n\n\nRecording available on YouTube \n\n\n\nOver two weeks in October 2025\, Stroud Water Research Center\, together with nearly 100 of its partner organizations throughout the mid-Atlantic region\, mobilized for the Fall Salt Pollution Stream Snapshot\, a fall community science stream monitoring event to characterize year-round salt pollution levels and patterns in streams and rivers. \n\n\n\nThis effort builds on the Winter Salt Snapshot held in January during Winter Salt Week\, when volunteers documented the immediate impacts of winter road salt use. \n\n\n\nThe October event extended that work by sampling during baseflow conditions — when water levels are stable and not influenced by storm runoff — to show how salt pollution persists months after the last snow and ice. Data collected will be added to an online public salt map after the event. Learn more. \n\n\n\nJoin us to hear the results\, participate in the discussion\, and learn ways you can help keep our fresh water … fresh!

SUMMARY:Fall Salt Pollution Stream Snapshot
DESCRIPTION:Tookany/Tacony-Frankford (TTF) Watershed Partnership Upstream Conservation Leader Ryan Neuman\, along with volunteers Geoffrey Selling\, Ethan Simon\, Richard Getz\, and Patricia Hendrick-Emore\, participated in 2025 Winter Salt Week to monitor the impact of road salt on local waterways. With support from Stroud Water Research Center\, the team collected data on chloride and conductivity levels on Rock Creek and Baeder Creek\, two major tributaries to the Tookany. Photos: Wendi Lu\, TTF Watershed Partnership on Flickr.\n\n\n\nWant to Get Involved in Community Science? \n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center is planning a community science stream monitoring event this fall. Water sampling will assess salt pollution levels and patterns in streams and rivers\, helping researchers and community members better understand how road salt accumulates across different landscapes.  \n\n\n\nThe intention for this fall event will be to sample during baseflow conditions when water levels are stable and not influenced by storm runoff (i.e.\, when the water in the stream is originating from groundwater/water table) within a two-week sample window (October 1–15). \n\n\n\nThe salt snapshot provides a unique\, hands-on opportunity to generate data illustrating that road salt contaminates our watersheds year-round. This data will help start local conversations and shine a public spotlight on this critical water quality issue. The level of road salt contamination highly depends on how much road salt private applicators and municipalities use and how they handle it. Therefore\, local data are a vital part of the conversation.   \n\n\n\nTo get involved: \n\n\n\n\nReview the introductory email about the fall salt snapshot.\n\n\n\nReview the snapshot guidance document.\n\n\n\nRefer to the above documents and others in the 2025 Fall Snapshot Resources for Event Organizers folder.\n\n\n\nRegister with a watershed group to participate. All are welcome.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to Participate\n\n\n\nRequest Supplies\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Please get in touch with Community Science Facilitator David Bressler at dbressler@stroudcenter.org.  \n\n\n\nLearn More\n\n\n\n\nDiscover how road salt is polluting fresh water.\n\n\n\nRead the recap of our winter salt snapshot\, “Winter Salt Week Unites Those Concerned About Fresh Water.”\n\n\n\nView the data on a winter salt map.
