SUMMARY:World Water Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Stroud Science Seminar Series\n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday\, March 21. Doors open at 6 p.m. for refreshments. Come early for an education open house! Lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.Where: Stroud Water Research Center (map below)Cost: FREE and open to the public thanks to our sponsors. \n\n\n\nSponsored by:\n\n\n\nChasing Water in a Dynamically Changing World\n\n\n\nLecture by Brian Richter\, President of Sustainable Waters\n\n\n\nWater shortages are now affecting half the world’s population\, disrupting food and energy security as well as urban water supplies. The overuse of water and associated drying of rivers\, lakes\, and aquifers has become a leading cause of freshwater species imperilment. Climate change forecasts foretell even greater challenges in many water-scarce regions. These threats to our water future can be ameliorated\, but it will require bold and concerted action on the part of governments\, city leaders\, and farmers. This presentation will highlight the key solutions that must be implemented. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrian Richter has been a global leader in water science and conservation for more than 30 years. He is the president of Sustainable Waters\, a global water education organization\, where he promotes sustainable water use and management with governments\, corporations\, universities\, and local communities. He previously served as Managing Director for the Global Water Program of The Nature Conservancy\, an international conservation organization. Brian has consulted on more than 150 water projects worldwide. He serves as a water advisor to some of the world’s largest corporations\, investment banks\, and the United Nations\, and has testified before the U.S. Congress on multiple occasions. He also teaches a course on Water Sustainability at the University of Virginia.

SUMMARY:Macroinvertebrate Identification Training Event in Ontario
DESCRIPTION:Registrants who demonstrate proficiency during the course are encouraged to take the Society for Freshwater Science taxonomic certification exam. If you are interested in taking the exam\, please contact Mike Broomall at tcp@stroudcenter.org. \n\n\n\nIdentification of Ontario’s Benthic Invertebrate Families\n\n\n\nWhen: February 19–21Where: Lakehead University\, 500 University Avenue\, Orillia\, ON L3V 0B9 \n\n\n\nTo pass the Society for Freshwater Science taxonomic certification\, taxonomists must have mastered the terminology used in family-level keys; they must have learned the characters that distinguish families in each major group of invertebrates; and they must have studied a wide variety of specimens\, so they understand the morphological variability that exists within families. This course provides students an opportunity to acquire such skills and experience. Emphasis is on taxa from eastern North America (especially Ontario). \n\n\n\nThe course provides an intensive three days of learning (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Lectures and demonstrations will proceed for most of each day\, with a portion of each afternoon reserved for instructor-guided practice (students will identify their own\, or with provided specimens). Optional evening sessions (5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day) will review important concepts.

More than 1\,740\,000 students live and learn in Pennsylvania and the future well-being of our watersheds will soon rest in their hands. \n\n\n\nStakeholders across Pennsylvania are working to support students to graduate with the knowledge and skills to protect and restore their local watershed through the participation in Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE). MWEEs are learner-centered experiences that focus on investigations into local environmental issues that lead to informed action and civic engagement. \n\n\n\nMWEEs depend on the facilitation and support of both school and non-formal\, field-based educators for the experiences to be holistic and impactful. This workshop will help prepare non-formal environmental education providers to partner with K-12 classroom teachers on an MWEE. \n\n\n\nThis workshop has been designed to provide a deep understanding of the MWEE as a vehicle for advancing environmental literacy and stewardship while increasing standards-based student achievement. \n\n\n\nBonus! The workshop will be paired with an optional second day focused on enhancing your hands-on water education skills including macroinvertebrate sampling and identification\, water chemistry\, and stream habitat assessment. \n\n\n\n\nFunding made possible through generous B-WET grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA Grant #NA17NMF4570274).\n\n\n\nThese workshops will be facilitated by trainers from Stroud Water Research Center\, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, DCNR-Bureau of Pennsylvania State Parks\, Penn State Extension\, and Millersville University.\n\n\n\n\nQUESTIONS? SUMMARY:Brands That Give Back Month
DESCRIPTION:It’s Trail Creek Outfitter’s biggest month of giving yet! They have raised $12\,000 to invest in three local non-profits: Natural Lands\, Brandywine Conservancy\, and Stroud Water Research Center. They will all receive a donation\, but YOU get to decide how much! \n\n\n\nFor the month of September\, each purchase from a participating Brand that Gives Back will earn you a token to vote for one of the three local non-profit organizations. \n\n\n\nThe organizations that receives the most tokens by the end of each week will be granted $1\,200\, second will receive $1\,000 and third $800. Voting starts over every Saturday so come out and support your cause! \n\n\n\nA Vote for Us Is a Vote for Clean Fresh Water!\n\n\n\nYour vote will help us plant trees for healthy watersheds. Your vote will work toward our goal of making more streams swimmable\, drinkable\, and fishable! We will use the funding from this grant to help with the purchase of trees for a volunteer tree planting next spring. \n\n\n\nBrands That Give Back

SUMMARY:Rock Pack Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Where: Montana State University\, Bozeman\, MontanaAudience: Elementary\, middle\, and high school teachers\, environmental educators\, and interested citizens.Cost: FREE!Spaces are limited! Register by August 13. Contact Tara Muenz from Stroud Water Research Center for more information or to register. \n\n\n\nHow Can Packs of Rocks Spark Stream Exploration?\n\n\n\nHands-on experience! Touch slimy rocks and crawling freshwater macroinvertebrates\, learning how they and sediments tell the story of stream health.\n\n\n\nThe Rock Pack Experiment is a fun\, hands-on research tool for all students and citizens of all ages\, demonstrating the interconnectedness between our actions on land and life in streams. Rock Pack promotes interdisciplinary watershed education by allowing students to conduct and design their own experiments and apply their knowledge to protect local watersheds. \n\n\n\nJoin us at our workshop and we’ll show you how!\n\n\n\nSpend part of the day with us on Montana State University’s campus exploring Wally Byam Grove and learning how to place and remove rock packs!\n\n\n\nDuring this workshop\, participants will receive an overview of stream ecology\, geomorphology\, and animals as ecosystem engineers. Getting our boots in the water\, we’ll examine and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates that live within rock packs from a local stream. We’ll also give you great tools\, teaching activities\, and ideas to incorporate the workshop content into your own indoor or outdoor classroom\, programs\, or monitoring initiatives! \n\n\n\nAt the workshop you will receive: \n\n\n\n\nRock Pack kit give-aways!\n\n\n\nLunch\n\n\n\nTour of MSU’s ecology labs\n\n\n\nHands-on experience deploying rock packs in a stream\n\n\n\nTraining in macroinvertebrate identification\n\n\n\nFun teaching techniques to use in your classroom and community\n\n\n\nOne-on-one with the experts!\n\n\n\nContinuing education credits (for a fee)\n\n\n\n\nDid You Know?\n\n\n\nHydropsychid caddisflies (Trichoptera) are a group of globally distributed aquatic insects that spin silk mesh nets that they use to filter feed. These silk mesh nets are important ecosystem engineering structures in flowing waters that can regulate sediment erosion\, food particle delivery by altering near-bed current velocities\, and enhance habitat availability for other macroinvertebrates. Look for them in your rock packs! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA short film has been produced to take a closer look at caddisflies and their ecosystem engineering. This film is based upon work by Lindsey Albertson\, Ph.D. (Montana State University) and Melinda Daniels (Stroud Water Research Center) supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1557032. Any opinions\, findings\, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.
