The event is a collaboration between Stroud Water Research Center and our partner\, the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) at the University of Delaware.  \n\n\n\nAfter the film\, a panel of experts from DENIN and the Stroud Center will engage with the audience and offer insights into the local work underway to protect and improve our waters. \n\n\n\nAbout the PartnershipDENIN and the Stroud Center are linked through our people — colleagues working together for research and education — and also by the focus of what we study. The Stroud Center’s emphasis on freshwater science starts in the headwaters and extends downstream toward the coast. Much of DENIN’s research focuses on coastal systems\, extending from the ocean and estuaries to marshes and tidal streams that are fed by upland freshwater. Together we work to understand and protect our water quality and fragile aquatic ecosystems.

MWEE framework and Pennsylvania Science\, Technology & Engineering\, Environmental Literacy\, and Sustainability (STEELS) standards toward becoming a Pa. MWEE Certified Facilitator. Participants may be eligible to receive a stipend and up to 30 hours of Act 48.\n\nAll assignments and surveys\, with the exception of the post-implementation survey\, must be submitted by November 22\, 2023 to be eligible for stipend payment. If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies to explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena\, such as environmental issues\, has been demonstrated as a highly effective method for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\n\n\n\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\n\n\n\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental or environmental justice issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nInvestigate environmental or environmental justice issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n\n\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices. \n\n\n\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments. Participants are required to do the following to be eligible for the stipend and the full allotment of Act 48 credit hours: \n\n\n\n\nComplete the entire professional development sequence. \n\n\n\nComplete and submit all course assignments.\n\n\n\nComplete the pre-course\, post-course\, and post-classroom implementation surveys.\n\n\n\nDesign and implement an inquiry-based unit plan which utilizes select GIS tools within the first eight weeks of the 2023–2024 school year.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? See registration to note any dietary preferences.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration has closed. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a day at John Heinz Wildlife Refuge\, engaging side by side with scientists and educators from Stroud Water Research Center\, John Heinz\, and ShoreRivers as we embark on a hands-on journey exploring the impact of climate change on tidal wetlands. \n\n\n\nBonus: Participants get their very own foldscope to use forever\, with an opportunity for one teacher to be selected for a continued partnership to work with your school and us on these important topics in the upcoming 2023–2024 school year (funding is available)! \n\n\n\nTidal wetlands\, from salt marshes to cypress swamps\, are not just a scenic backdrop for coastal lifestyles. These vital ecosystems are home to diverse animal and plant communities\, provide valuable outdoor experiences for people\, and link biogeochemical cycles occurring in watersheds and their estuaries. Tidal wetlands are also shifting and changing as rising sea level pushes inland\, in some places disappearing under the tide forever or migrating upslope with altered plant communities. While the recent acceleration of sea level rise is driven by global warming\, the response of tidal wetlands is governed by plant physiology\, hydrodynamics\, and sediment supply. \n\n\n\nMeasuring the sand and mud carried by rivers and delivered to tidal wetlands is more complicated than it might seem. Scientists are using high-tech methods borrowed from the biotech sector to track where sediment comes from over different timescales to help predict how tidal wetlands in different places will respond to sea level rise. \n\n\n\nBut not everyone needs to use these tools to appreciate the balancing act playing out in tidal wetlands across the coast! A few simple lessons can help people understand these processes and their implications for our watersheds and communities and how we can live sustainably on our coasts. \n\n\n\nWorkshop Objectives\n\n\n\n\nEngage with scientists to learn about the importance of estuaries and how climate change impacts them (and us!)\n\n\n\nExplore an estuary\, collecting and analyzing water and soil samples with activities you can replicate with students.\n\n\n\nCollaboratively model how to incorporate these topics into issue investigations and phenomena-based learning curricula.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Enrolled scouts will then have two weeks to complete and submit the online requirements\, which will be reviewed and accepted or returned if more information is required.  \n\n\n\nThe in-person program will include the remaining requirements and discussions to fulfill the Fish and Wildlife Management Merit badge\, including a required fishery or wildlife habitat improvement project. \n\n\n\nWe invite any interested Scouts BSA Troops or scouts to register for this hybrid merit badge program. Preference will be given to scouts or troops who were unable to attend the program last spring. Registration is not automatic acceptance in this program\, although registration is required to be considered for this hybrid merit badge program. \n\n\n\nPlease note\, the hybrid portion of this merit badge program will occur via the Stroud Center’s online learning portal. To maintain youth protection protocols and to access the online course\, parents or adult caregivers must use their email addresses to register scouts for this hybrid program and monitor their online activities. DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesday\, November 9\, 2022\, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.Where: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311Cost: Free to any Pennsylvania educator or administrator. Seats are limited and registration is required.\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a full-day workshop to work through the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE) framework while furthering your environmental literacy and stewardship knowledge. Attendees will go outdoors to engage in a hands-on learning experience while developing the skills to integrate MWEE into their classrooms and schools. Following the workshop\, attendees will be invited to further learning opportunities to become a Certified MWEE Ambassador! \n\n\n\nTopics: See what 3d teaching and learning looks and feels like as we align to new PA state standards for science and environmental literacy.Experience: Get outside and experience how much fun outdoor learning can be and how easy it is to implement K-12.\n\n\n\nPresented by:
