SUMMARY:Algae\, Algae\, Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Harmful Algal Bloom in the western basin of Lake Erie on September 25\, 2017. Photo: Aerial Associates Photography\, Inc. by Zachary Haslick\, public domain\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Monday\, June 10\, 2024. Doors open at 6 p.m. for light refreshments. The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. Please RSVP so we can plan for refreshments.\n\n\n\n\nThis event has passed. To be notified of upcoming events\, please subscribe to our freshwater e-news. \n\n\n\nLaura Johnson\, Ph.D.\, will explain the causes of harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie\, why we need to be concerned about these blooms\, and what we should do to prevent exposure to bloom toxins. In addition\, we will examine:  \n\n\n\n\nHow scientists forecast bloom severity in Lake Erie. \n\n\n\nHow activity on land has resulted in changes in the water quality of Lake Erie tributaries that feed these blooms.\n\n\n\nWhat actions are being taken to improve water quality.\n\n\n\nWhat individuals can do to help.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Laura JohnsonLaura Johnson is director of the National Center for Water Quality Research at Heidelberg University\, which is known for its long-term monitoring of streams and rivers throughout the region. Results from this monitoring are used to forecast the algal blooms in Lake Erie\, assess the primary sources of nutrient and sediment pollution in Ohio’s watersheds\, and track the success of various land management strategies. The center is also monitoring an innovative pilot watershed approach to assess conservation practices in the headwaters of the Blanchard River and a portion of the wetlands in the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program. Under her guidance since 2016\, the lab continues to set the gold standard for research in nonpoint source pollution in watersheds.

SUMMARY:Taxonomic Certification Opportunity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:What: Aquatic insect ecology workshop with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams. When: Course runs May 13 through 16\, 2024; Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on May 16.Where: Laurel Community Center\, 4100 NC 212 Highway\, Marshall\, NC 28753. \n\n\n\nAquatic Insect Ecology Workshop\n\n\n\nAquatic insects (benthic macroinvertebrates) play key roles in many regulatory water quality programs in North Carolina and the Southeast. These insects have been used by regulatory agencies to assess water pollution and trends in stream health since the mid-1970s. Many metrics have been developed to make the use of these data effective and understandable to non-biologists. \n\n\n\nBenthic insects are proposed as tools for the determination of stream restoration effectiveness and project prioritization by regulatory agencies. Despite the value of this group of organisms in regulatory programs\, very little is generally known about these insects as valuable regulatory tools. This workshop series will introduce participants to the ecology and taxonomy of aquatic insects. \n\n\n\nLevel 2 workshop is geared to environmental professionals: \n\n\n\n\nLocal\, state\, and federal aquatic ecologists; interagency review teams.\n\n\n\nBiologists with environmental consulting firms.\n\n\n\nFaculty and students with aquatic emphasis.\n\n\n\nManagers with citizen science programs.\n\n\n\n\n\nInformation and Registration\n\n\n\n\nIf you would like to take an exam at this event\, please fill out the Taxonomic Certification Exam Interest Form*. SUMMARY:2024 Joan and Dick Stroud Memorial Lecture
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesday\, May 15\, 2024. Doors open at 6 p.m. for light refreshments; lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311.\n\n\n\nCost: Free\, thanks to a generous sponsor. Please let us know you’re coming so we can plan refreshments.\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Now\n\n\n\n\nAward-winning author and photographer Tim Palmer will present a slideshow based on his new book\, Seek Higher Ground: The Natural Solution to Our Urgent Flooding Crisis\, published by University of California Press. \n\n\n\nWith striking photos and engaging narrative\, Palmer will explain how efforts to control floods through dam and levee construction have been\, at best\, inadequate\, and how the endless cycle of floods\, damage\, recovery\, and repeated losses can best be ended through the protection of open space on floodplains and voluntary relocation of homes and businesses from hazard-prone areas. \n\n\n\nPalmer will show how the warming climate is making flood dangers worse\, and how an improved response is essential if widespread disasters are to be avoided in the future.

The Stroud Center’s emphasis on freshwater science starts in the headwaters and extends downstream toward the coast. Much of DENIN’s research focuses on coastal systems\, extending from the ocean and estuaries to marshes and tidal streams that are fed by upland freshwater. Together we work to understand and protect our water quality and fragile aquatic ecosystems.

Participants may be eligible to receive a stipend and up to 30 hours of Act 48.\n\nAll assignments and surveys\, with the exception of the post-implementation survey\, must be submitted by November 22\, 2023 to be eligible for stipend payment. The post-implementation survey must be completed before distribution of Act 48 hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration closes on Friday\, September 8\, 2023. Enrollment will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis; space is limited. Confirmation\, prerequisite assignments\, and course site login information will be sent on or before September 16\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nHave you been searching for the missing link that helps bridge the gap between delivering environmental content and developing environmental literacy? Do you want to help your students understand their connections to their local environment but are limited by established curriculum sequences? Have COVID-19 restrictions on classroom and lab experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations using the environment as an integrative concept? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies to explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena\, such as environmental issues\, has been demonstrated as a highly effective method for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\n\n\n\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\n\n\n\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental or environmental justice issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nInvestigate environmental or environmental justice issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n\n\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices. \n\n\n\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments. Participants are required to do the following to be eligible for the stipend and the full allotment of Act 48 credit hours: \n\n\n\n\nComplete the entire professional development sequence. \n\n\n\nComplete and submit all course assignments.\n\n\n\nComplete the pre-course\, post-course\, and post-classroom implementation surveys.\n\n\n\nDesign and implement an inquiry-based unit plan which utilizes select GIS tools within the first eight weeks of the 2023–2024 school year.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Tamara Peffer\, tpeffer@pa.gov\, 717-772-0842.
