Leaf Pack promotes inquiry-based interdisciplinary watershed education and engages diverse audiences in conducting their own experiments\, gathering relevant ecological data\, exploring food webs\, learning classification skills\, using technology to share data\, comparing data with those of other communities and applying that information to protect local watersheds. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJOIN US AT OUR WORKSHOP\, WE’LL SHOW YOU HOW!\n\n\n\nDuring this workshop participants will receive an overview of stream ecology and watershed concepts based on research done at Stroud Water Research Center. Taking our boots to the stream\, we’ll then experience hands-on examination of leaf packs with live aquatic macroinvertebrates\, including their identification a look at the Leaf Pack Network® website and database. A short taxonomic certification exam (free and easy!) at the volunteer level of ID will be given through the Society for Freshwater Science as part of a new pilot project! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHand-On Experience\n\n\n\nYou’ll touch slimy leaves and rocks\, learning about Leaf Pack methods and how aquatic macroinvertebrates tell us the story about stream health. \n\n\n\nBoots in the Water\n\n\n\nSpend the day with us at the beautiful Ogden Botanical Garden classroom on the banks of the Ogden River! SUMMARY:Advanced Watershed Educator Workshop for Non-Formal Educators
DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, August 27\, and Wednesday\, August 28\, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.Where: Dauphin County Agriculture & Natural Resources Center\, Dauphin\, PA (map below)Audience: Environmental educators (non-formal\, informal\, field-based\, naturalists)Cost: FREE! Includes a catered lunch\, snacks\, and refreshments. Act 48 hours will be provided by DCNR-PA State Parks. \n\n\n\nWe all rely on the services provided by our natural world to survive and thrive — and we can all play a role in supporting a healthy and vibrant ecosystem. More than 1\,740\,000 students live and learn in Pennsylvania and the future well-being of our watersheds will soon rest in their hands. \n\n\n\nStakeholders across Pennsylvania are working to support students to graduate with the knowledge and skills to protect and restore their local watershed through the participation in Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE). MWEEs are learner-centered experiences that focus on investigations into local environmental issues that lead to informed action and civic engagement. \n\n\n\nMWEEs depend on the facilitation and support of both school and non-formal\, field-based educators for the experiences to be holistic and impactful. This workshop will help prepare non-formal environmental education providers to partner with K-12 classroom teachers on an MWEE. \n\n\n\nThis workshop has been designed to provide a deep understanding of the MWEE as a vehicle for advancing environmental literacy and stewardship while increasing standards-based student achievement. \n\n\n\nBonus! The workshop will be paired with an optional second day focused on enhancing your hands-on water education skills. You’ll learn about stormwater and agriculture best management practices and drinking-water chemistry. \n\n\n\n\nFunding made possible through generous B-WET grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA Grant #NA17NMF4570274).\n\n\n\nThese workshops will be facilitated by trainers from Stroud Water Research Center\, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, DCNR-Bureau of Pennsylvania State Parks\, Penn State Extension\, and Millersville University.

SUMMARY:Slimy Leaves for Healthy Streams: A Training in the Leaf Pack Network
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, October 5\, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.Where: Stroud Water Research Center (map below)Audience: Middle and high school teachers\, environmental educators\, and anyone interested in citizen science.Cost: $5. Registration is required\, see instructions below. Bring your own lunch. \n\n\n\nHow can clumps of slimy leaves spark stream exploration? \n\n\n\nThe Leaf Pack Experiment is a fun\, hands-on research and outreach tool for citizens of all ages and teachers\, demonstrating how our actions on land impact life in streams and water quality. \n\n\n\nJoin us at our workshop\, we’ll show you how! \n\n\n\nParticipants will receive an overview of stream ecology and watershed concepts based on research done at Stroud Water Research Center. Taking our boots to the stream\, we’ll experience hands-on examination of leaf packs with live aquatic macroinvertebrates\, including their identification\, and take a look at the Leaf Pack Network® website. \n\n\n\nLeaf Pack Experiment Stream Ecology Kits can be found at https://leafpacknetwork.org/resources\n\n\n\nAt the workshop you will receive: \n\n\n\n\nLeaf Pack kit give-a ways!\n\n\n\nTour of the Stroud Center’s research labs and LEED-Platinum certified building\n\n\n\nHands-on experience deploying and retrieving leaf packs from the stream\n\n\n\nTraining in macroinvertebrate ID\n\n\n\nFUN teaching techniques to bring to your classes!\n\n\n\nCertificate of participation (volunteer hours or towards teacher professional development credits)
