It’s an exciting and accessible teaching tool for K–12 students and public audiences to examine freshwater biology. The tank provides a short-term environment for stream critters that you can set up at your school or another location. \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, you will: \n\n\n\n\nGet hands-on experience with a Stroud Center–designed aquatic macroinvertebrate discovery tank. From setup to takedown\, you’ll learn how to make stream lessons more accessible.\n\n\n\nDiscover resources to support your use of a discovery tank as a teaching tool and activities on aquatic macroinvertebrates for K–12 students and public audiences.\n\n\n\nUnderstand how the discovery tank experience works with Pennsylvania’s STEELS standards and NOAA’s Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience framework.\n\n\n\n\n We’ll spend our time indoors and outside at our research stream. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions\, experience this learning tool for yourself\, and plan where it can be used to serve your audiences. Water sampling will assess salt pollution levels and patterns in streams and rivers\, helping researchers and community members better understand how road salt accumulates across different landscapes.  \n\n\n\nThe intention for this fall event will be to sample during baseflow conditions when water levels are stable and not influenced by storm runoff (i.e.\, when the water in the stream is originating from groundwater/water table) within a two-week sample window (October 1–15). \n\n\n\nThe salt snapshot provides a unique\, hands-on opportunity to generate data illustrating that road salt contaminates our watersheds year-round. This data will help start local conversations and shine a public spotlight on this critical water quality issue. The level of road salt contamination highly depends on how much road salt private applicators and municipalities use and how they handle it. Please check out the other camps being offered from February through June! \n\n\n\nWhen schools are closed\, Stroud Water Research Center is open for young nature explorers. Our School-Days-Off Camps invite third- through fifth-grade students to spend a fun-filled day outdoors along White Clay Creek. Each camp features a unique theme with nature-inspired crafts\, hands-on science experiments\, and outdoor adventures that spark curiosity and wonder.  \n\n\n\nThe theme for the January School-Days-Off Camp is Stroud Center Scientists. Throughout the day\, campers will take the roles of different scientists at the Stroud Center\, from entomologists to chemists! Campers will investigate along White Clay Creek\, perform hands-on science experiments\, and create crafts related to research conducted at the Stroud Center. \n\n\n\n\nWhen: Monday\, January 19\, 2026. Drop-off is at 9 a.m.\, and pick-up is at 3:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311.\n\n\n\nCost: $100. One hour of before- and/or after-care is available for an additional $10 each.\n\n\n\nLunch is not provided. Please pack a lunch and snack for your camper. \n\n\n\nRegistration information:\n\nEach camp is limited to 25 campers.\n\n\n\nA minimum of 10 campers is needed to run the camp. Pennsylvania state-certified K–12 teachers are eligible for up to 30 hours of Act 48. If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies\, participants will explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena and environmental issues in their local watersheds\, while using examples from the Great Lakes Basin to provide a shared learning context. This place-based methodology has been demonstrated as a highly effective strategy for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\n\n\n\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\n\n\n\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nInvestigate environmental issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n\n\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices. \n\n\n\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments.
