Through the Taxonomic Certification Program\, the Stroud Center works with SFS to strengthen scientific rigor by advancing certified taxonomic expertise. Adam Schellhammer\, Katie Schmidt\, and Jessie Thomas-Blate from American Rivers\, a national non-profit dedicated to protecting and restoring rivers\, will discuss the complex relationship between dams\, rivers\, and communities in the United States. They will share stories of river restoration from California’s Klamath River to local waterways in Pennsylvania. \n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how dams affect river health and public safety\, why many dams have outlived their intended purposes\, and how dam removal can help build more resilient communities and ecosystems. They will leave better equipped to recognize opportunities and advocate for healthier rivers and streams in their own communities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeld in memory of Joan and Dick Stroud\, co-founders of Stroud Water Research Center\, this lecture series features speakers who enlighten and entertain while sharing research and perspectives on subjects from watershed ecology to conservation and more. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Speakers\n\n\n\nAdam Schellhammer\, the Mid-Atlantic Region Director for American Rivers\, leads a team dedicated to dam removal\, river restoration\, and clean water programming. He brings more than a decade of experience turning conservation goals into practical projects through partnerships with communities\, landowners\, government agencies\, and funders. His work has taken him from Pennsylvania to New Zealand and has focused on restoring rivers\, improving water quality\, and helping communities become more resilient. Outside of work\, Adam enjoys outdoor adventures with his family and spending time along the rivers and landscapes he works to protect. \n\n\n\nKatie Schmidt is the Director of the National Dam Removal Program at American Rivers\, where she leads the organization’s federal policy strategy to advance safe\, strategic dam removal across the United States. She works closely with federal agencies\, states\, Tribes\, practitioners\, and partner organizations to align priorities\, share knowledge\, and accelerate projects that restore rivers and improve public safety. Katie also leads American Rivers’ Dam Removal Network\, a community of dam removal practitioners\, working to strengthen collaboration and build capacity for the field. Her work emphasizes low-head dams and hydropower dam removals. Katie researched and authored a national guide to removing federally regulated hydropower dams. Katie holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Studies from Virginia Commonwealth University\, with a focus on hydrology and natural resources policy. \n\n\n\nJessie Thomas-Blate leads American Rivers’ on-the-ground restoration team in the Mid-Atlantic region. She coordinates river restoration project implementation\, data\, strategy\, and resources for the regional team. As a project manager in eastern Pennsylvania and Maryland\, Jessie executes dam removal projects by coordinating partners\, funders\, regulators\, and contractors. She also leads dam removal communities of practice in Maryland\, Pennsylvania\, and Virginia. Jessie also manages the national database of dam removals. She holds a Master of Science in Natural Resources from Delaware State University and a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Mary Washington College in Virginia.

SUMMARY:Fall Salt Pollution Stream Snapshot
DESCRIPTION:A map showing Valley Forge Trout Unlimited’s 2025 Fall Salt Snapshot sampling sites.\n\n\n\nWant to Get Involved in Community Science? \n\n\n\n\n\nJoin the 2026 Fall Salt Snapshot! \n\n\n\n01737\n\n\n\nSites registered \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center is again coordinating a baseflow salt snapshot to assess year-round salt pollution levels and patterns in streams and rivers\, helping researchers and community members better understand how road salt accumulates across different landscapes.  \n\n\n\nThe target sampling date is Thursday\, October 15\, and the priority date range is Thursday\, October 15 through Sunday\, October 18\, weather permitting.  \n\n\n\nAll sample collection should be done during baseflow conditions when water levels are stable and not influenced by storm runoff. \n\n\n\nIn early October\, all participants should use 1- to 10-day forecasts to ensure they collect baseflow samples (baseflow = a stream’s resting state\, fed mostly by groundwater rather than storm runoff). The recommendation for a baseflow sample is no significant rain (~0.25 inches or more) in the 48 hours before sample collection. Significant rainfall will require sampling outside the target October 15–18 range.  \n\n\n\n\nThe salt snapshot provides a unique\, hands-on opportunity to generate data illustrating that road salt contaminates our watersheds year-round. This data will help start local conversations and shine a public spotlight on this critical water quality issue. The level of road salt contamination highly depends on how much road salt private applicators and municipalities use and how they handle it. Therefore\, local data are a vital part of the conversation.   \n\n\n\n\nQuestions? RSVPs are appreciated but not required.\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Now\n\n\n\n\nIs Your Local Stream Getting Salty?\n\n\n\nSalt keeps us safe on icy roads — but it’s also quietly harming waterways. Every winter\, millions of tons of salt are spread on roads\, sidewalks\, and driveways to combat snow and ice. While it’s effective at reducing slippery conditions\, the consequences for freshwater ecosystems\, infrastructure\, and drinking water are profound\, especially as winter salt use has risen dramatically over the past 50 years.  \n\n\n\nPhoto: Dave Funk\n\n\n\n\nBut road salt isn’t just a winter issue. It seeps into our groundwater\, making streams salty and harming wildlife year-round. \n\n\n\n\nIf you live in the Harrisburg area and are worried about salt pollution in your local stream\, collect a water sample and bring it to the testing event. Volunteers will test it for chloride and conductivity\, and Stroud Water Research Center scientists will add the data to the interactive salt map at stroudcenter.info/saltmap. \n\n\n\nGet Your Streamwater Tested\n\n\n\n\nDownload and print the salt snapshot sample data sheet. (This is optional\, but will speed up testing at the event.)\n\n\n\nWhile at your sample site\, record the location as precisely as possible by dropping a pin in a mapping app on your phone.\n\n\n\nCollect about two cups of water in a clean container for each sample.\n\n\n\nFill out the data form with your sample information. \n\n\n\nBring your samples and data form to the event for analysis.\n\n\n\n\nRSVPs are appreciated but not required.
