SUMMARY:EnviroDIY Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Penn State Water Resources Extension webinar on Wednesday\, December 20\, 2017\, will discuss EnviroDIY.org: A Resource for Do-It-Yourself\, Real-Time\, Low-Cost Environmental Monitoring Solutions. The presenters will be David B. Arscott\, Ph.D.\, Executive Director\, and Shannon Hicks\, Research Engineer\, Stroud Water Research Center. \n\n\n\nHow to Participate\n\n\n\n• The live webinar will occur from 12–1 p.m. EST and is accessible at: https://meeting.psu.edu/water1. You can access this webinar by signing in as a “guest.”• If this will be your first webinar\, you may want to test your computer and internet connection for compatibility at: https://meeting.psu.edu/common/help/en/support/meeting_test.htm \n\n\n\nWebinar Description\n\n\n\nScientists and educators around the world have been building their own dataloggers and devices using a variety of open source electronics platforms like Arduino®. Here we introduce resources and tools that you can use to build real-time\, low-cost data loggers that can form the core of your DIY freshwater or terrestrial monitoring system. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will introduce attendees to the resources\, tutorials\, and processes for building a monitoring station that includes a solar-powered data logger connected to radio telemetry that is flexible to connect to a variety of sensors. Examples of commercially available sensors for measuring water depth\, temperature\, specific conductivity\, turbidity\, dissolved oxygen\, precipitation\, soil moisture\, and soil redox conditions will be shown/discussed. Various deployment options/strategies for stream-side installations will be presented. Participants will be introduced to an option for web-based data capture and live data streaming that can display graphs on custom web pages. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, participants will be introduced to our EnviroDIY online community where members can share new ideas about open-source hardware and software solutions for observing our environment. EnviroDIY members can showcase their gadgets or describe their projects\, ask questions\, or follow along with helpful tutorials. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters\n\n\n\nDavid Arscott\, Ph.D.\, is Executive Director and Research Scientist at Stroud Water Research Center. He is a stream and river ecologist and has published research on riverine biodiversity\, biogeochemistry\, floodplain ecology\, ecohydrology\, and land-water interactions. He has field experiences that range across the U.S. and globally from the European Alps\, to the Southern Alps\, from the Arctic to the Antarctica\, and in Central America. He received his Ph.D. from the Swiss Federal Institute for Environmental Science and Technology\, his M.S. from the University of New Hampshire\, and his B.S. from Central Michigan University. Arscott co-leads WikiWatershed and EnviroDIY.org initiatives with other Stroud Center team members. \n\n\n\nShannon Hicks has been developing\, building and deploying environmental sensing devices since she received her B.S. in electrical engineering in 2000. Since Shannon joined the Stroud Center in 2010\, her focus has been on developing environmental monitoring solutions using the open-source Arduino electronics platform. She is a co-founder and primary contributor of EnviroDIY.org.

SUMMARY:Pennsylvania No-Till Alliance Winter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Healthy Soils: Building a Strong Foundation\n\n\n\nThursday\, December 7\, 8:45 a.m. – 3 p.m. Shady Maple Smorgasbord\, East Earl\, PA \n\n\n\nFeaturing Gail Fuller\n\n\n\nMr. Fuller farms 1\,700–1\,800 acres plus 300 acres of custom work in Emporia\, Kansas. On those acres he no-tills up to 13 crops including corn\, grain sorghum\, triticale\, winter barley\, soybeans\, and winter wheat. He has used 60–70 different mixes of cover crops\, utilizing sunflowers\, radishes\, turnips\, and clovers most often. He was the recipient of the 2013 American Soybean Association® Conservation Legacy Award. \n\n\n\n\nGail Fuller approaches conservation on his Kansas farm with a heavy emphasis on soil health including continuous no-till\, utilizing cover crops and maximizing microbes. He always looks for ways to reduce inputs. Fuller is working to rebuild the quail population and has added a livestock component to his farm. — American Soybean Association \n\n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center is the lead sponsor of this soil health/cover crop farmer meeting being hosted by PA No-Till Alliance. SUMMARY:Watershed Restoration Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, September 30\, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\n\n\n\nWhat to bring/wear: Long pants\, long-sleeved shirt\, gloves\, a hat if sunny\, water and a snack.\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers will help measure trees and record data from an experiment this spring. You will be taught how to identify tree species. The purpose of the study is to see which method of using herbicide resulted in more tree regeneration. This study will directly lead to learning best management practices (BMPs) for regenerating forestlands around streams and wetlands. BMPs will be taught for suburban and rural areas\, including farms. \n\n\n\nThis study is part of a federal grant that resulted from the devastation that followed Hurricane Sandy. Hurricanes and other extreme water events teach us that we need our headwaters and small first order streams to absorb water and connect with the floodplain in order to reduce the force and rate of water discharge during storms. \n\n\n\nRSVP required! \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Calen Wylie. \n\n\n\nCan’t make this date? We have year-round volunteer opportunities!
