SUMMARY:Advanced Watershed Educator Workshop for Non-Formal Educators
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is full! To be notified of additional workshops as they are scheduled\, please subscribe to our education e-news. \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, April 9 and Wednesday\, April 10\, 9 a.m to 3 p.m. each day.Where: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311Audience: Environmental educators (non-formal\, informal\, field-based\, naturalists)Cost: FREE! More than 1\,740\,000 students live and learn in Pennsylvania and the future well-being of our watersheds will soon rest in their hands. \n\n\n\nStakeholders across Pennsylvania are working to support students to graduate with the knowledge and skills to protect and restore their local watershed through the participation in Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE). MWEEs are learner-centered experiences that focus on investigations into local environmental issues that lead to informed action and civic engagement. \n\n\n\nMWEEs depend on the facilitation and support of both school and non-formal\, field-based educators for the experiences to be holistic and impactful. SUMMARY:World Water Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Stroud Science Seminar Series\n\n\n\nWhen: Thursday\, March 21. Doors open at 6 p.m. for refreshments. Come early for an education open house! Lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.Where: Stroud Water Research Center (map below)Cost: FREE and open to the public thanks to our sponsors. \n\n\n\nSponsored by:\n\n\n\nChasing Water in a Dynamically Changing World\n\n\n\nLecture by Brian Richter\, President of Sustainable Waters\n\n\n\nWater shortages are now affecting half the world’s population\, disrupting food and energy security as well as urban water supplies. The overuse of water and associated drying of rivers\, lakes\, and aquifers has become a leading cause of freshwater species imperilment. Climate change forecasts foretell even greater challenges in many water-scarce regions. These threats to our water future can be ameliorated\, but it will require bold and concerted action on the part of governments\, city leaders\, and farmers. This presentation will highlight the key solutions that must be implemented. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBrian Richter has been a global leader in water science and conservation for more than 30 years. He is the president of Sustainable Waters\, a global water education organization\, where he promotes sustainable water use and management with governments\, corporations\, universities\, and local communities. He previously served as Managing Director for the Global Water Program of The Nature Conservancy\, an international conservation organization. Brian has consulted on more than 150 water projects worldwide. He serves as a water advisor to some of the world’s largest corporations\, investment banks\, and the United Nations\, and has testified before the U.S. Congress on multiple occasions. He also teaches a course on Water Sustainability at the University of Virginia.

SUMMARY:Macroinvertebrate Identification Training Event in Ontario
DESCRIPTION:Registrants who demonstrate proficiency during the course are encouraged to take the Society for Freshwater Science taxonomic certification exam. If you are interested in taking the exam\, please contact Mike Broomall at tcp@stroudcenter.org. \n\n\n\nIdentification of Ontario’s Benthic Invertebrate Families\n\n\n\nWhen: February 19–21Where: Lakehead University\, 500 University Avenue\, Orillia\, ON L3V 0B9 \n\n\n\nTo pass the Society for Freshwater Science taxonomic certification\, taxonomists must have mastered the terminology used in family-level keys; they must have learned the characters that distinguish families in each major group of invertebrates; and they must have studied a wide variety of specimens\, so they understand the morphological variability that exists within families. This course provides students an opportunity to acquire such skills and experience. Emphasis is on taxa from eastern North America (especially Ontario). \n\n\n\nThe course provides an intensive three days of learning (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.). Lectures and demonstrations will proceed for most of each day\, with a portion of each afternoon reserved for instructor-guided practice (students will identify their own\, or with provided specimens). Optional evening sessions (5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day) will review important concepts.

We’ll use the newly enhanced macroinvertebrates.org website (containing 150 taxa) as our tool for engagement and understanding\, and to assist you with your own identification needs or in your role as educator or trainer in aquatic insects. We’ll be diving deeper into the caddisfly order (Trichoptera) and the amazing world of the net-spinning caddisfly family (Hydropsychidae). \n\n\n\nTime will be spent mostly in our learning laboratory working through different identification experiences\, with a small portion outside to do some live collections. \n\n\n\nWhat to bring: \n\n\n\n\nLaptop or tablet computer (we have extras if you cannot bring one)\n\n\n\nWriting utensil\n\n\n\n\nThe Stroud Center will provide: \n\n\n\n\nWading boots for collecting macroinvertebrates in the stream\n\n\n\nIdentification keys\n\n\n\nMacroinvertebrate.org give-aways!\n\n\n\n\nOur partners in creating this NSF-funded website from the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie-Mellon University will be on hand studying how the site can help with teaching and learning macroinvertebrate ID. This workshop will help prepare non-formal environmental education providers to partner with K-12 classroom teachers on an MWEE. \n\n\n\nThis workshop has been designed to provide a deep understanding of the MWEE as a vehicle for advancing environmental literacy and stewardship while increasing standards-based student achievement. \n\n\n\nBonus! The workshop will be paired with an optional second day focused on enhancing your hands-on water education skills including macroinvertebrate sampling and identification\, water chemistry\, and stream habitat assessment. \n\n\n\n\nFunding made possible through generous B-WET grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA Grant #NA17NMF4570274).\n\n\n\nThese workshops will be facilitated by trainers from Stroud Water Research Center\, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, DCNR-Bureau of Pennsylvania State Parks\, Penn State Extension\, and Millersville University.\n\n\n\n\nQUESTIONS?
