SUMMARY:[POSTPONED] Salt Pollution Water Testing Event in Harrisburg
DESCRIPTION:When: Wednesday\, March 25\, 2026 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: The Rotunda at the Pennsylvania State Capitol Complex\, N. 6th St. & Reily St.\, Harrisburg\, PA 17120.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.\n\n\n\n\nThis event has been postponed until fall 2026. To be notified of the new date\, subscribe to our e-news. \n\n\n\nIs Your Local Stream Getting Salty?\n\n\n\nSalt keeps us safe on icy roads — but it’s also quietly harming waterways. Every winter\, millions of tons of salt are spread on roads\, sidewalks\, and driveways to combat snow and ice. While it’s effective at reducing slippery conditions\, the consequences for freshwater ecosystems\, infrastructure\, and drinking water are profound\, especially as winter salt use has risen dramatically over the past 50 years. \n\n\n\nPhoto: Ad Meskens\, CC BY-SA 3.0\, via Wikimedia Commons\n\n\n\nIf you live in the Harrisburg area and are worried about salt pollution in your local stream\, collect a water sample and bring it to the testing event. Volunteers will test it for chloride and conductivity\, and Stroud Water Research Center scientists will add the data to the interactive salt map at stroudcenter.info/saltmap. \n\n\n\nGet Your Streamwater Tested\n\n\n\n\nDownload and print the salt snapshot sample data sheet. (This is optional\, but will expedite testing at the event.)\n\n\n\nWhile at your sample site\, record the location as precisely as possible by dropping a pin in a mapping app on your phone.\n\n\n\nCollect about two cups of water in a clean container for each sample.\n\n\n\nFill out the data form with your sample information. \n\n\n\nBring your samples and data form to the event for analysis.\n\n\n\n\nRSVPs are appreciated but not required. Questions? Email communications@stroudcenter.org. \n\n\n\nPresented in Partnership By

DESCRIPTION:Photo: Naja Bertolt Jensen\, Unsplash\n\n\n\nJoin Us for the First of Three Lectures in the 2026 Stroud Science Seminar Series\n\n\n\n\nWhen: Wednesday\, April 8\, 2026. Doors open at 6 p.m. for light refreshments. Lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311.\n\n\n\nCost: Free\, thanks to presenting sponsor Meridian Bank\, but please RSVP.\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP Now\n\n\n\n\nFrom Your Washing Machine to the Ocean: The Hidden Journey of Microplastics\n\n\n\nMicroplastics are everywhere: in the ocean\, in the air\, and even in our everyday lives. But how do scientists actually find something hard to see? \n\n\n\nPhoto: Rozalia Project\n\n\n\nJoin National Geographic Explorer Rachael Miller for a behind-the-scenes look at how her team investigates microplastic pollution using techniques inspired by forensic science — examining the ocean as if it were a crime scene and uncovering clues about where pollution comes from and how to stop it. \n\n\n\nThrough global expeditions and a growing network of community scientists\, Rachael Miller is helping map one of the planet’s most pervasive emerging contaminants and empowering people everywhere to be part of the solution. \n\n\n\nYou’ll learn: \n\n\n\n\nHow scientists detect and track microplastics.\n\n\n\nWhy microfibers from everyday clothing are a major source of pollution.\n\n\n\nHow community science (aka citizen science) is transforming water research.\n\n\n\nSimple\, practical ways you can reduce your impact.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Rachael Miller\n\n\n\nRachael Miller is an expedition scientist\, inventor\, National Geographic Explorer\, and Fellow of The Explorers Club. She is the co-founder of the Rozalia Project and co-inventor of the Cora Ball\, a tool designed to capture microfibers before they enter waterways. Miller leads scientific expeditions around the world — from coastal waters to remote ocean regions — producing research published in peer-reviewed journals while engaging thousands of people through hands-on education and community science. Her work bridges cutting-edge research with everyday action\, helping people better understand their connection to water and their role in protecting it. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2026 Science Seminar Series Presented by:

SUMMARY:Taxonomic Certification Opportunity in North Carolina
DESCRIPTION:What: Intensive two-week course with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams.\n\n\n\nWhen: Session 1 runs from June 22 to July 3\, 2026. Session 2 runs from July 6 to 17\, 2026. Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on July 3 and 17.\n\n\n\nWhere: Highlands Biological Station in Highlands\, North Carolina.\n\n\n\n\nThis immersive\, two-week course provides a comprehensive introduction to the natural history\, evolution\, and taxonomy of the three major aquatic insect orders used in freshwater bioassessment: mayflies (Ephemeroptera)\, stoneflies (Plecoptera)\, and caddisflies (Trichoptera). Through a combination of field excursions to Appalachian mountain streams and focused laboratory identification sessions\, students will develop the skills needed to recognize EPT larvae — typically to at least the genus level — and adults to the family level. \n\n\n\nStudents may opt to take the Society for Freshwater Science’s Taxonomic Certification exam of eastern EPT to genus at the end of the course. \n\n\n\n\nCourse Information\n\n\n\n\nIf you would like to take an exam at this event\, please fill out the Taxonomic Certification Exam Interest Form*.
