Many of these efforts have advanced to the point that high-quality scientific measurements can be made using relatively inexpensive and increasingly off-the-shelf components. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will introduce resources and tools that you can use to build real-time\, low-cost data loggers that can form the core of your DIY environmental monitoring system. Material available at https://wikiwatershed.org/monitor/ provides resources\, tutorials\, and data capture/visualization solutions that make building\, deploying and using a “home-built” environmental monitoring station a viable option for high-quality environmental monitoring. \n\n\n\nMonitoring stations that we have deployed to date around the world include a solar-powered datalogger connected to radio telemetry that connects to a variety of sensors\, such as water depth\, temperature\, conductivity\, turbidity\, dissolved oxygen\, precipitation\, soil moisture\, and soil redox conditions. DESCRIPTION:When: May 13-14\, 2020\, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.Where: Stroud Water Research Center The workshop has been changed from in-person to online via Zoom video conference.Audience: Individuals and groups who want guidance in building\, programming\, installing\, and managing EnviroDIY monitoring stations. Workshop is limited to 12 participants.Cost: $475* (attendance fee\, per person). There are additional costs (see Registration section below) if you want to leave the workshop with your own monitoring station. \n\n\n\n*If you are participating on behalf of a Pennsylvania watershed protection organization or your organization is part of the Delaware River Watershed Initiative you may qualify for financial assistance; contact David Bressler for details. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will guide attendees through the process of building an EnviroDIY monitoring station. Attendees will leave the workshop with a functional monitoring station equipped with a Conductivity/Temperature/Depth (CTD) sensor. Refreshments\, light breakfast\, and lunch will be provided on both days. Please wear shoes and clothes suitable for light outdoor work. Laptop computers will be provided for use in programming of Mayfly Data Loggers. \n\n\n\nRegistration\n\n\n\nWorkshop registrants are responsible for reading and understanding all of the following information — including the preparations they need to make and additional costs that may be incurred. The expanded collection includes features nine orders of aquatic insects plus other benthic macroinvertebrates commonly used in water quality biomonitoring and environmental education\, with 150 taxa total. \n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we’ll provide an overview of how this NSF-funded project was developed through a participatory design process with an interdisciplinary team of entomologists\, educators\, designers\, and learning researchers in cooperation with regional volunteer biomonitoring organizations involved in water quality assessment. Sharing existing regional science\, Marc Peipoch\, Ph.D.\, an ecosystem ecologist at Stroud Water Research Center\, will bring us into an awareness and understanding of these impacts with an update on the status of freshwater systems. Tara Muenz\, assistant director of education at the Stroud Center\, will then lead us into a set of hands-on/mind-on activities you can use with groups to start the conversation about climate resiliency in freshwater systems through the lens of aquatic macroinvertebrates! \n\n\n\nIn order to receive the 6 hrs Act 48\, Project WET 2.0 Guide\, Climate\, Water & Resilience Unit\, and Healthy Water Healthy People Guides\, participants must attend both dates and complete the assigned homework activities (approx. 2 hours). \n\n\n\nCurriculum guides and materials are provided via a generous grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. \n\n\n\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:When: Once a week for five weeks during August and early September from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. See list of dates below.Where: Online.Audience: The training is designed for staff of NRCS\, FSA\, soil conservation districts\, extension\, and non-profits involved in agricultural conservation. It is also appropriate for the private agricultural sector staff including seed and chemical dealers\, crop advisers\, and custom operators.Cost: This program is being offered free of charge thanks to the generous support of the USDA Northeast Sustainable Agriculture\, Research and Development Grant. Comprehensive course manual included. Space is limited; registration closes July 15\, 2020. \nNorth Jersey Resource Conservation & Development\, in partnership with New Jersey Audubon and Stroud Water Research Center\, has created a comprehensive No-Till and Cover Crop Online Education Program. \nWe are inviting public\, private\, and non-profit agricultural service providers to participate in a five-part\, interactive\, webinar training series emphasizing no-till and cover crop implementation that will train agricultural service providers to better support farmers who are preparing for and implementing in-field soil health practices. \nTopics include: \n\nSteps farmers should take to prepare for no-till.\nDifferent types of no-till equipment and attachments.\nNutrient management in a no-till setting.\nPractical cover crop seed selection tips.\nCover crop application methods for every crop system.\nCover crop termination techniques.\n\nWebinars will occur once a week for five weeks during August\, and early September from 9:00 to 10:30 am. To keep group sizes small and encourage a more regional dialog\, each workshop will be offered three times each week. Each day of the week will emphasize a different region with different soils\, climate\, and crops. \n \nParticipants will be eligible for Maryland and Pennsylvania Nutrient Management CECs and Certified Crop Advisor CEUs*. In addition\, all participants will receive a copy of the newly released book\, “A Practical Guide to No-Till and Cover Crop.”

Pre-registration is required. \nPart 1: Ever take a walk out in a forest and come out feeling refreshed\, relaxed\, and at peace? Scientific research has shown there are many benefits to being immersed in these kinds of natural surroundings such as lowering heart rates\, regulating blood pressure\, and reducing stress or anxiety. Forests are also important to watersheds\, and trees are needed by streams to keep them healthy\, acting as a buffer to upland pollution\, providing shade to cool the waters while also being a source of nutrition through the leaves they drop. Find your senses in this ecosystem as we immerse in the ecological\, emotional\, and physical benefits and how you can bring these concepts and experiences into the classroom through peaceful forest walks (forest bathing) and tree plantings either virtually or on your own school grounds. \nPart 2: An herb garden is the perfect multi-sensory teaching tool for your classroom! Learn how to create your own classroom-sized herb garden\, perfect for a windowsill or desk. This teaching tool is suited to grade levels K-5. Discover the history of herbs\, their culinary and medicinal uses\, and identification of different herbs based on observable characteristics.

The goal was to manage water on the site in a way that mimics nature — leaving a smaller overall environmental footprint\, better protecting White Clay Creek\, and acting as both a teaching vehicle and a replicable model for others to follow. \n\n\n\nThe water management at the Stroud Center has succeeded but there have been challenges to overcome along the way. Join us for a roundtable discussion among the designers\, engineers\, and client about “getting the water right” at the Moorhead Environmental Complex. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will begin with a virtual tour of the facility so participants can get acquainted with the project and overall site. SUMMARY:Youth Watershed Explorer Challenge
DESCRIPTION:When: Three separate challenges will take place October 1 through November 5\, 2020.\nAudience: Youths aged 12-16. The challenges meet the Ranger Certificate criteria for Scouts BSA and Girl Scouts but you do not need to be a Scout to participate.\nCost: Free! Pre-registration required. \nRegistration for this event has closed. \nYouth Watershed Explorers (YWE) is a program that pairs field “investigative” experiences with virtual learning. Explorers will be guided through three challenges\, all of which focus on the significance of First State National Historical Park’s Brandywine Valley unit. Each challenge will consist of short virtual learning sessions that build upon the in-nature components. \nExplorers will need an adult to help them get out into nature to begin the field tasks\, but should be able to complete those tasks on their own using the YWE-designed field notebooks and resources we provide once Explorers are registered. \nThe three challenges will have the Explorers analyzing water quality in the creeks and streams in the park\, revealing the hidden secrets of the landscape\, and forming a lasting connection to the watershed. At the completion of the program each participant will receive a certificate and a Junior Ranger Badge. \nEach challenge will consist of a 30-minute zoom conversation before and after the field experience in Wilmington\, Delaware. SUMMARY:Volunteer Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, October 8\, 1 – 4 p.m.Where: Fat Chance Farm. Directions and parking instructions will be emailed to registrants. \nWe will be planting approximately 2.75 acres with 675 trees on a primary tributary of Doe Run Creek. This planting will also serve as a research site as we will be collecting data on the growth rate of trees in two different types of tree tubes. At this point\, we’re planning to move forward as we would with a regular volunteer tree planting and have volunteers come in the afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. \nIf recommendations change for our state\, or volunteers would feel more comfortable\, we have the flexibility to move to a smaller number of individuals spaced throughout the day (or week if need be).
