SUMMARY:Penn State Water Insights Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Penn State Environment and Natural Resources Institute \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, March 20 at 12 p.m.Where: Room 102\, Forest Resources Building\, University Park\, PA\, or online using Zoom. Lunch will be provided to those who attend in person. \n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center associate scientist\, Melinda Daniels\, Ph.D.\, will present the next Penn State Water Insights Seminar. \n\n\n\n\nWatershed restoration has always presented an opportunity for addressing both ecological and human resiliency concerns\, yet quantifying and communicating the connections between the two has been challenging. This has resulted in segmented\, piecemeal restoration funding with limited ecological or human resiliency benefits. We appear to be in a phase of opportunity to produce larger\, connected\, holistic watershed restoration with clear and quantifiable improvements in both human and ecological resiliency. In this session we showcase a demonstration watershed restoration effort funded following Hurricane Sandy that employs multiple in-channel\, floodplain\, and hillslope strategies to restore hydrologic and water quality function to a headwater tributary of the Brandywine Creek watershed with dual goals of human and ecological resiliency to large magnitude disturbance events as well as persistent climate and land use change pressures. \n\n\n\n\nView the list of seminars in this series and links to recordings of past seminars

SUMMARY:Slimy Leaves for Healthy Streams: A Training in the Leaf Pack Network
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 109:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.Stroud Water Research CenterFREE! Registration is required. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is intended for middle and high school teachers and environmental educators. Bring your own lunch. \n\n\n\nHow can clumps of slimy leaves spark stream exploration?\n\n\n\nThe Leaf Pack Experiment is a fun\, hands-on research and outreach tool for citizens of all ages and teachers\, demonstrating how our actions on land impact life in streams and water quality. Leaf Pack promotes inquiry-based interdisciplinary watershed education and engages diverse audiences in conducting their own experiments\, gathering relevant ecological data\, exploring food webs\, learning classification skills\, using technology to share data\, comparing data with those of other communities and applying that information to protect local watersheds. \n\n\n\nJoin us at our workshop\, we’ll show you how!\n\n\n\nParticipants will receive an overview of stream ecology and watershed concepts based on research done at Stroud Water Research Center. Taking our boots to the stream\, we’ll experience hands-on examination of leaf packs with live aquatic macroinvertebrates\, including their identification\, and take a look at the Leaf Pack Network® website. \n\n\n\nLeaf Pack Experiment Stream Ecology Kits can be found at https://leafpacknetwork.org/resources\n\n\n\nAt the workshop you will receive: \n\n\n\n\nLeaf Pack kit give-a ways!\n\n\n\nTour of the Stroud Center’s research labs and LEED-Platinum certified building\n\n\n\nHands-on experience deploying and retrieving leaf packs from the stream\n\n\n\nTraining in macroinvertebrate ID\n\n\n\nFUN teaching techniques to bring to your classes!\n\n\n\nCertificate of participation (volunteer hours or towards teacher professional development credits)\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is sponsored by a grant from the Consortium for Scientific Assistance to Watersheds.

Examples of commercially available sensors for measuring water depth\, temperature\, specific conductivity\, turbidity\, dissolved oxygen\, precipitation\, soil moisture\, and soil redox conditions will be shown/discussed. Various deployment options/strategies for stream-side installations will be presented. Participants will be introduced to an option for web-based data capture and live data streaming that can display graphs on custom web pages. \n\n\n\nAdditionally\, participants will be introduced to our EnviroDIY online community where members can share new ideas about open-source hardware and software solutions for observing our environment. EnviroDIY members can showcase their gadgets or describe their projects\, ask questions\, or follow along with helpful tutorials. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenters\n\n\n\nDavid Arscott\, Ph.D.\, is Executive Director and Research Scientist at Stroud Water Research Center. DESCRIPTION:Healthy Soils: Building a Strong Foundation\n\n\n\nThursday\, December 7\, 8:45 a.m. – 3 p.m. Shady Maple Smorgasbord\, East Earl\, PA \n\n\n\nFeaturing Gail Fuller\n\n\n\nMr. Fuller farms 1\,700–1\,800 acres plus 300 acres of custom work in Emporia\, Kansas. On those acres he no-tills up to 13 crops including corn\, grain sorghum\, triticale\, winter barley\, soybeans\, and winter wheat. He has used 60–70 different mixes of cover crops\, utilizing sunflowers\, radishes\, turnips\, and clovers most often. He was the recipient of the 2013 American Soybean Association® Conservation Legacy Award. \n\n\n\n\nGail Fuller approaches conservation on his Kansas farm with a heavy emphasis on soil health including continuous no-till\, utilizing cover crops and maximizing microbes. He always looks for ways to reduce inputs. Fuller is working to rebuild the quail population and has added a livestock component to his farm. — American Soybean Association \n\n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center is the lead sponsor of this soil health/cover crop farmer meeting being hosted by PA No-Till Alliance. SUMMARY:Watershed Restoration Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:When: Saturday\, September 30\, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Stroud Water Research Center\n\n\n\nWhat to bring/wear: Long pants\, long-sleeved shirt\, gloves\, a hat if sunny\, water and a snack.\n\n\n\n\nVolunteers will help measure trees and record data from an experiment this spring. You will be taught how to identify tree species. The purpose of the study is to see which method of using herbicide resulted in more tree regeneration. This study will directly lead to learning best management practices (BMPs) for regenerating forestlands around streams and wetlands. BMPs will be taught for suburban and rural areas\, including farms. \n\n\n\nThis study is part of a federal grant that resulted from the devastation that followed Hurricane Sandy. Hurricanes and other extreme water events teach us that we need our headwaters and small first order streams to absorb water and connect with the floodplain in order to reduce the force and rate of water discharge during storms. \n\n\n\nRSVP required! \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Calen Wylie. \n\n\n\nCan’t make this date? We have year-round volunteer opportunities!
