SUMMARY:The Intersection of Art and Science: Episode 2\, Behind the Lens and Below the Surface
DESCRIPTION:Photo: Bob Croslin/National Geographic \n\n\n\n\nWhen: June 23\, 2021\, 12:30-1:30 p.m. EDT. Can’t attend the webinar? Register to receive a link to the video recording!\n\n\n\nWhere: Online via Zoom videoconferencing. Please register to receive connection information.\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for the second episode in our webinar series exploring the intersection of art and science. Jennifer Adler will take us on an underwater journey as she uses her imagery to communicate science and conservation. She will give a 45-minute presentation followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. \n\n\n\nAdler is a conservation photographer and underwater photojournalist. Her work is informed by her scientific background\, and she uses her imagery to communicate science and conservation. She has a degree in marine biology from Brown University and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary ecology from the University of Florida. She specializes in underwater photography and is a trained freediver and cave diver. An ongoing theme in her work is the connection between people and water in a changing climate. Her grant-funded and assignment work has taken her all over the world to document science and conservation for The Nature Conservancy\, National Geographic\, Huffington Post\, and the International Women’s Media Foundation. Adler is a freelance photojournalist represented by National Geographic Image Collection. \n\n\n\nA gar swims in the clear waters of a north Florida river. Registration is REQUIRED due to a limited number of seats online and in person.\n\n\n\nDesigned for both formal and non-formal educators\, this free hybrid (virtual/in-person) MWEE Ambassador Training will help participants explore how the Meaningful Watershed Education Experience (MWEE) framework can connect K-12 students to sustainable concepts and Erie County’s local water resources. \n\n\n\nMWEEs are powerful learner-centered experiences in which students investigate local environmental issues\, complete informed action projects\, improve standards-based achievement\, and grow environmental literacy. \n\n\n\nParticipants in this multi-day workshop are required to complete a 2-hour virtual prerequisite prior to June 23 and participate in the 2-hour virtual MWEE Ambassador Training on June 23 to become Certified MWEE Ambassadors. The second portion of the workshop\, Water Education Skill-Building\, will take place in person in Erie County on June 24. \n\n\n\nPrerequisite: MWEE 101 \n\n\n\n(Virtual – at your own pace prior to June 23)\n\n\n\nThis virtual course must be completed prior to the June 23–24 Erie County MWEE Ambassador Training. The learner-centered MWEE framework promotes hands-on investigations of local environmental issues\, leading to student driven actions. Student projects take many forms including environment restoration or protection\, everyday choices\, community engagement\, and civic action. \n\n\n\nAct 48: 2 hours \n\n\n\nDay 1: MWEE Ambassador Training \n\n\n\n(Virtual – Wednesday\, June 23\, 2021\, 10 a.m.–Noon EDT)\n\n\n\nThis virtual session is REQUIRED to become a Certified MWEE Ambassador and will address designing MWEES with the Environmental Literacy Model (ELM) to help situate the MWEE within the scope and sequence of your curriculum. \n\n\n\nAct 48: 2 hours \n\n\n\nDay 2: Water Education Skill-Building \n\n\n\n(In Person – Thursday\, June 24\, 2021\, 9 a.m.–4 p.m.)\n\n\n\nWhere: Headwaters Park\, 1927 Wager Road\, Erie\, PA 16509 (9 a.m.–12 p.m.\, June 24) in the morning followed by the (1–4 p.m.) afternoon spent at the JoAnna Connell Elementary School\, 1820 East 38th St.\, Erie\, PA 16510. Participants will travel to second location in their personal vehicle. \n\n\n\nParticipants will be engaged in several hands-on experiences in Erie County focusing on the connectedness of natural water to our daily lives. Group will be exploring how natural streams eventually connect to our drinking water supply and how the surrounding environment impacts the health of that water. Participants will be engaging in water experiments\, testing\, and activities that translate to use with their own students. This connects the resource to current curriculum and helps students experience and discover the interconnectedness of local waterways to their daily lives. Please bring your own lunch\, mask\, and transportation. \n\n\n\nAct 48: 6 hours \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCOVID-19 SAFETY PROTOCOLS💧 All participants must wear face masks with a proper fit (over the nose\, chin\, and cheeks) throughout the entire duration of their visit on the Headwaters Park/JoAnna Connell Elementary School campuses. SUMMARY:Schuylkill Acts & Impacts Expedition for Youth!
DESCRIPTION:An Expedition to Inspire Watershed Action\n\n\n\nOur typical Schuylkill Acts & Impacts program is a weeklong watershed expedition along the 120-miles of the Schuylkill River exploring the connections between land-use and water quality. Twelve students from the five counties in the watershed experienced first-hand the impact of human development on water quality through guided tours\, fieldwork\, water sampling and interactive presentations with policy makers and planners. The program included camping each night and several kayak adventures. \n\n\n\nDue to COVID exposure\, this year we are offering a modified version of the program. Overall goals of the program remain the same\, but format differs. Students from each of the five counties will participate in two days (9 a.m.–5 p.m.) of activities which will include water sampling\, land-use explorations\, and a kayak trip. Eight students will be selected to participate at each of four locations. \n\n\n\nLocation and target topics will be as follows: \n\n\n\nJune 19 and 20\, Schuylkill County: The impact of legacy coal mining on water quality.June 21 and 22\, Berks County: Agricultural impacts including erosion and manure management.June 23 and 24\, Chester/Montgomery Counties: The role of land preservation in watershed health.June 25 and 26\, Philadelphia County: The impacts of stormwater and impervious surfaces on water resources.\n\n\n\nPlease download the application on the Schuylkill Headwaters website for more information! Any questions can be directed to Alexa Smith at outreach@schuylkillheadwaters.org or 570-622-3742\, ext. 3336. \n\n\n\nPlease download the application for more information! Questions? Contact Alexa Smith at outreach@schuylkillheadwaters.org or 570-622-3742\, ext. 3336. \n\n\n\nComplete applications must be submitted by Friday\, APRIL 30\, 2021. \n\n\n\nSchuylkill Acts & Impacts is made possible by:

SUMMARY:Riparian Buffer Mini-Arboretum Tour
DESCRIPTION:When: June 15\, 2021\, 5:30-6:30 p.m.Where: Stroud Water Research Center (map below)Registration: Free\, limited to 15 people!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen we work with landowners to plant native trees and shrubs along their streams (a best practice called a riparian forested buffer)\, there is a short list of woody species that are proven performers that thrive under the demanding growing conditions on floodplains. \n\n\n\nBut nature loves diversity! \n\n\n\nIn the interest of testing new plants that could further enhance riparian areas\, the Stroud Center has planted a mini-arboretum along the banks of White Clay Creek in our experimental watershed. It contains a wide selection of lesser-known native trees and shrubs\, provided by our friends at Octoraro Native Plant Nursery. We hope you can join us for a tour of the mini-arboretum and a discussion of our other restoration projects. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Jessica Provinski.
