SUMMARY:Science Seminar: Nature’s Best Hope
DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, October 25\, 2022. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for light refreshments. Lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: The Meetinghouse at Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Rd.\, Avondale\, PA 19311\n\n\n\nCost: Free\, thanks to our sponsor Lael Farm\, but you must RSVP to attend.\n\n\n\nIn-person and virtual options available.\n\n\n\nCo-hosted by Stroud Water Research Center and Penn Vet.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn-person seats are full! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRecent headlines about global insect declines and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us. To create landscapes that enhance local ecosystems rather than degrade them\, we must: \n\n\n\n\nRemove invasive species from our properties.\n\n\n\nAdd the native plant communities that sustain food webs\, sequester carbon\, maintain diverse native bee communities\, and manage our watersheds.\n\n\n\n\nIf we do this in half of the area now in lawn\, we can create a Homegrown National Park\, a 20 million-acre network of viable habitats that will provide vital corridors connecting the few natural areas that remain. This approach to conservation empowers everyone to play a significant role in the future of the natural world. \n\n\n\nPhoto: Rob Cardillo\n\n\n\nDoug Tallamy is the T. A. Baker Professor of Agriculture in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. He has authored 106 research publications and taught insect-related courses for 41 years. Chief among his research goals is to better understand the many ways insects interact with plants and how such interactions determine the diversity of animal communities. \n\n\n\nHis books include “Bringing Nature Home\,” “The Living Landscape\,” co-authored with Rick Darke\, “Nature’s Best Hope\,” a New York Times Best Seller\, and “The Nature of Oaks\,” winner of the American Horticultural Society’s 2022 book award. In 2021 he co-founded Homegrown National Park with Michelle Alfandari. His awards include recognition from The Garden Writers Association\, Audubon\, The National Wildlife Federation\, Allegheny College\, The Garden Club of America\, and The American Horticultural Association. \n\n\n\nQuestions about this event? Mann\, Ph.D.\n\n\n\nSpeaking Truth and Science About Climate Change\n\n\n\nMichael E. Mann\, Ph.D.\, has spent his career investigating climate change\, communicating about its reality\, and highlighting the politics that seek to undermine action against it. \n\n\n\nMann’s research on climate variability and extremes has been at the forefront of climate change science. In 1999\, he and his colleagues examined 1\,000 years of temperature changes that produced the hockey stick graph\, so named because of its pronounced upward curve. The data\, which combined decades of work by paleoclimate scientists\, and its stunning visual presentation served as a smoking gun in the case proving human-induced climate change. \n\n\n\nWriting about this work\, Mann has said\, “Although scientific revolutions in how we see the world do occur\, the bulk of our scientific understanding comes from the cumulative impact of numerous incremental studies that together paint an increasingly coherent picture of how nature works.” \n\n\n\n\nTo share his knowledge and warn the public about climate change\, he has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed and edited publications\, numerous op-eds and commentaries\, and five books. His most recent work\, The New Climate War: The Fight to Take Back Our Planet\, examines the 30-year campaign launched by fossil fuel companies to delay action on climate change and offers a battle plan for how to save the planet.

The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhat: Lecture and documentary film screening.\n\n\n\nWhere: The Meetinghouse at Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311.\n\n\n\nCost: Free\, but you must RSVP to attend.\n\n\n\n\n\nRead the Event Recap\n\n\n\n\nExploring Our Hidden Waters – an Evening of Film\, Imagery\, and Storytelling\n\n\n\nFeaturing a Pennsylvania premiere of the feature film Hidden Rivers\n\n\n\nPresented by filmmaker Jeremy Monroe \n\n\n\nFilmmaker Jeremy Monroe demonstrates his underwater photography rig. Photo: Jeff Basinger\n\n\n\nJeremy Monroe is a biologist-filmmaker and founder of Freshwaters Illustrated\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to producing and sharing imagery and stories of freshwater ecosystems\, biodiversity\, culture\, and conservation. He has worked across the US and beyond\, learning about and sharing the beauty and wonder of rivers\, lakes\, and wetlands and the stories of those who work to understand and protect them. Jeremy carries a love for water and a background in aquatic ecology and leads a talented team of creators to produce immersive imagery and films that convey the beauty and value of fresh water. \n\n\n\nHidden Rivers is a 1-hour film that explores the rivers and streams of the Southern Appalachian region\, North America’s most biologically rich waters. The film follows the work of conservation biologists and explorers throughout the region — revealing both the beauty and vulnerability of this aquatic life — and how many people are finding ways to protect these ecosystems. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHeld in memory of Joan and Dick Stroud\, co-founders of Stroud Water Research Center\, this lecture series allows us to share with our friends and the general public a special evening with speakers who will both enlighten and entertain — sharing their research and their perspectives on subjects from watershed ecology to conservation and more.

SUMMARY:[In-Person Educator Workshop] Tidal Wetlands in the Face of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:When: Friday\, April 14\, 2023\, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum\, Philadelphia\, PA (map below)\n\n\n\nAudience: This workshop is open to homeschool providers\, classroom teachers\, and non-formal environmental educators. Six hours of Act 48 are available for Pennsylvania Certified Teachers. A certificate of participation will be provided for teachers/participants outside of Pennsylvania.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. Seats are limited and registration is required. The school districts of the first 10 teachers who register can be reimbursed for substitute teacher costs.\n\n\n\nLunch: Provided thanks to our NSF project funding! See registration to note any dietary preferences.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration has closed. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a day at John Heinz Wildlife Refuge\, engaging side by side with scientists and educators from Stroud Water Research Center\, John Heinz\, and ShoreRivers as we embark on a hands-on journey exploring the impact of climate change on tidal wetlands. \n\n\n\nBonus: Participants get their very own foldscope to use forever\, with an opportunity for one teacher to be selected for a continued partnership to work with your school and us on these important topics in the upcoming 2023–2024 school year (funding is available)! \n\n\n\nTidal wetlands\, from salt marshes to cypress swamps\, are not just a scenic backdrop for coastal lifestyles. These vital ecosystems are home to diverse animal and plant communities\, provide valuable outdoor experiences for people\, and link biogeochemical cycles occurring in watersheds and their estuaries. Tidal wetlands are also shifting and changing as rising sea level pushes inland\, in some places disappearing under the tide forever or migrating upslope with altered plant communities. While the recent acceleration of sea level rise is driven by global warming\, the response of tidal wetlands is governed by plant physiology\, hydrodynamics\, and sediment supply. \n\n\n\nMeasuring the sand and mud carried by rivers and delivered to tidal wetlands is more complicated than it might seem. Scientists are using high-tech methods borrowed from the biotech sector to track where sediment comes from over different timescales to help predict how tidal wetlands in different places will respond to sea level rise. \n\n\n\nBut not everyone needs to use these tools to appreciate the balancing act playing out in tidal wetlands across the coast! A few simple lessons can help people understand these processes and their implications for our watersheds and communities and how we can live sustainably on our coasts. \n\n\n\nWorkshop Objectives\n\n\n\n\nEngage with scientists to learn about the importance of estuaries and how climate change impacts them (and us!)\n\n\n\nExplore an estuary\, collecting and analyzing water and soil samples with activities you can replicate with students.\n\n\n\nCollaboratively model how to incorporate these topics into issue investigations and phenomena-based learning curricula.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Enrollment will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis; space is limited. Confirmation\, prerequisite assignments\, and course site login information will be sent on or before September 16\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nHave you been searching for the missing link that helps bridge the gap between delivering environmental content and developing environmental literacy? Do you want to help your students understand their connections to their local environment but are limited by established curriculum sequences? Have COVID-19 restrictions on classroom and lab experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations using the environment as an integrative concept? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies to explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena\, such as environmental issues\, has been demonstrated as a highly effective method for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\n\n\n\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\n\n\n\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental or environmental justice issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nInvestigate environmental or environmental justice issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n\n\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices. \n\n\n\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments. Participants are required to do the following to be eligible for the stipend and the full allotment of Act 48 credit hours: \n\n\n\n\nComplete the entire professional development sequence. \n\n\n\nComplete and submit all course assignments.\n\n\n\nComplete the pre-course\, post-course\, and post-classroom implementation surveys.\n\n\n\nDesign and implement an inquiry-based unit plan which utilizes select GIS tools within the first eight weeks of the 2023–2024 school year.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions?
