SUMMARY:Smart Talk About Road Salt
DESCRIPTION:When: Monday\, February 7\, 2022\, broadcast live from 9:45–10 a.m ET; rebroadcast from 7–8 p.m.Where: Live on WITF 89.5 FM Harrisburg. \n\n\n\nJoin the conversation as WITF Smart Talk host Scott LaMar talks with Senior Research Scientist John Jackson\, Ph.D.\, about the trouble with road salt. \n\n\n\n\nSlick roads in winter can be hazardous. Whenever the weather forecast calls for snow and ice\, PennDot and local municipalities’ road crews go to work to treat roadways before a storm and then plow and  clear them afterwards. Road salt is one of their tools. It melts the snow and ice and helps to make the streets\, roads and highways safer to drive on. Motorists almost take for granted that the roads will be cleared and salt will be used to help do it. PennDot applies some 800\,000 tons of road salt each year. The hazy white streaks left on paved surfaces and even sidewalks and parking lots are a testament to the salt that was used. But road salt doesn’t just melt snow and ice. It creeps into the soil and can get into waterways and have a negative impact on aquatic life and plants. So says our guest on Monday’s Smart Talk\, John Jackson\, Senior Research Scientist at Stroud Water Research Center in Chester County. \nWITF.org

SUMMARY:[Virtual Educator Workshop] Wild and Scenic Rivers in the Face of Climate Change: An Immersion in White Clay Creek
DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, February 22\, 2022\, 6–8 p.m. ESTWhere: Online via Zoom video conferencing. The connection link will be emailed prior to the event.Audience: This online session is open to homeschool providers\, classroom teachers\, and non-formal environmental educators. Two hours of Act 48 are available for Pennsylvania Certified Teachers. A certificate of participation will be provided for teachers outside of Pennsylvania.Cost: Free.\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nEvaporating water sources\, wildlife die-offs\, deepening droughts\, intensifying storms and flooding. \n\n\n\nThe profound impacts climate change is wreaking on our freshwater systems threaten every person and ecosystem in our country. \n\n\n\n Healthy rivers are our best defense. \n\n\n\n                                                                            –American Rivers \n\n\n\nClimate change is striking our rivers first and hardest. This educator professional development workshop will focus on tools\, resources\, and ideas that pertain to climate change impacts and how to improve our choices around freshwater resources while focusing on a very special place on the planet\, White Clay Creek watershed. \n\n\n\nWhite Clay Creek has a unique status of being a National Wild and Scenic River\, the first to be protected on a watershed basis. Flowing through parts of Chester County\, Pennsylvania\, and New Castle County\, Delaware\, the watershed faces threats that affect all of us. With outstanding resource values in recreation\, geology\, wildlife\, history\, and culture\, White Clay Creek is a perfect example for educators to bring place-based learning into their lessons that promote and support the protection and restoration of these resources. \n\n\n\nSpecial guest speakers include Shane Morgan\, White Clay Creek management plan coordinator\, who will take us on a virtual tour and share the beauty and needs of the watershed as well as the opportunities to connect to a very special waterway. Sharing existing regional science\, Marc Peipoch\, Ph.D.\, an ecosystem ecologist at Stroud Water Research Center\, will bring us into an awareness and understanding of climate impacts with an update on the status of freshwater systems. Tara Muenz\, assistant director of education at the Stroud Center\, will then lead us into a set of hands-on/mind-on activities you can use with groups to start the conversation about climate resiliency in freshwater systems through the lens of aquatic macroinvertebrates! \n\n\n\nWhat more could you ask for? Jump on in and join us in February 2022! Questions? Please email Tara Muenz (co-instructor of workshop). \n\n\n\nPresented in partnership with:

SUMMARY:Model and Monitor My Watershed Geospatial and Data Analysis Tools for Middle and High School Teachers
DESCRIPTION:When: Monday\, March 21\, 2022\, 4–6 p.m. EST.Where: Online via Zoom video conferencing. The connection link will be emailed prior to the event.Audience: This online session is open to classroom teachers and school leaders in the local service regions of Stroud Water Research Center (Southeastern and south central PA) and Shore Rivers (Eastern Shore of Maryland). The first 20 teachers registered from the two specific regions (10 each) mentioned above will receive $50 stipends for their participation. Two hours of Act 48 continuing education hours are available for Pennsylvania Certified Teachers. A certificate of participation will be provided for teachers outside of Pennsylvania.Cost: Free\, thanks to grant funders.  \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nAre you looking for ways to help your students understand their connections to the local environment? Are you interested in incorporating technology and data analysis into your students’ environmental units? Have COVID restrictions on classroom and lab experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations using the environment as an integrative concept? \n\n\n\nIf you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies to explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena\, such as environmental issues\, has been demonstrated as a highly effective method for both teachers and students at all grade levels to better understand impacts with the natural world. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance an existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nJoin this professional development event to learn about the WikiWatershed Toolkit of resources\, specifically Model My Watershed and Monitor My Watershed\, to help you accomplish your instructional goals. \n\n\n\nThe Stroud Center and ShoreRivers have received a National Science Foundation grant (Resolving Sediment Connectivity Between Rivers and Estuaries by Tracking Particles with their Microbial Genetic Signature) which includes additional funding to support Pennsylvania and Maryland teachers in applying these workshop concepts and tools in their classrooms. Over the next few years this funding also supports pilot curricular collaborations\, including school visits and field experiences. A short breakout time at the end of this webinar will include a preview of how teachers may become involved in future activities of this NSF grant.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is offered in collaboration with another grant-funded project (PSU Sea Grant and NOAA) and professional development series called “Blending MWEE and GIS for Educators: Expanding Meaningful Environmental and Watershed Literacy with Geospatial Technology Tools and Practice.” By attending this March 21 workshop you’ll join a cohort of teachers in that project for 1 of 6 parts of that workshop series. If you are interested in the full 6-part workshop series it will be offered again in the late summer or fall of 2022.Questions? SUMMARY:Food\, Flora\, and Fun at Lancaster’s Native Plant and Wildlife Festival
DESCRIPTION:Need Garden Inspo\, or Just Want to Enjoy Nature? \n\n\n\nJoin US at Lancaster’s Native Plant and Wildlife Festival for Food\, Flora\, and Fun!\n\n\n\n\nWhen: April 30\, 2022 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. \n\n\n\nWhere: Overlook Community Campus\, across from the Manheim Township Public Library\, 595 Granite Run Drive\, Lancaster\, Pa.\n\n\n\nWhat: Meet native plant vendors\, enjoy food truck fare\, hear environmental lectures\, and see an exciting new nature project using native plants to restore and protect a nearby stream.\n\n\n\n\nThe annual Lancaster Native Plant and Wildlife Festival is a time to learn about\, celebrate\, and protect our local environment using native plants. Native flowering plants\, shrubs\, and trees are those that originated and developed in our region\, unlike species introduced from other parts of the world. Think goldenrod\, winterberry\, and sycamore versus purple loosestrife\, barberry\, and callery pear. Native plants are important not only for local wildlife\, they are critical to restoring our streams and rivers\, and all the critters that call our waterways home.   \n\n\n\nJohn Williamson of TeamAg\, Inc.\, plants a sycamore seedling in the Overlook Park forest buffer. TeamAg works with the Stroud Center on dozens of farm conservation projects each year. Photo: Lancaster Clean Water Partners\n\n\n\nNew to this year’s festival is an 8-acre native habitat restoration area at Overlook Park in Manheim Township featuring trees\, shrubs\, and flowers that enhance nearby wetlands and a small stream that flows to the Little Conestoga Creek. Developed by Stroud Water Research Center\, Manheim Township\, the Alliance for the Chesapeake\, Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, Lancaster Clean Water Partners\, and many other partners\, this project is part of a countywide campaign to protect clean fresh water by planting over 1 million trees and shrubs on 6\,000 acres of streamside areas on farms\, parks\, and residential and business areas throughout the county.  \n\n\n\nLamonte Garber\, the Stroud Center’s watershed restoration coordinator\, will give a tour of the project to visitors who attend the festival. \n\n\n\nMark your calendar for Saturday\, April 30\, and we will see you there! \n\n\n\nVolunteer to Care for Native PlantsYou can help us nurture the new plants at Overlook Park. Register for the Stream Care Workday on June 4\, part of Lancaster Water Week. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Overlook ParkOverlook Park is a community public space that hosts hundreds of visitors every day\, many of whom walk\, bike\, or drive to enjoy this natural setting just north of Lancaster City. As such\, this young streamside forest is a place where visitors can enjoy nature and see firsthand how these streamside plantings are reducing pollution\, creating stream habitat\, and feeding and sheltering wildlife and pollinators.
