Now\, Stroud Water Research Center and Trout Unlimited are bringing the STREAM to the screen during Return of the STREAM Girls\, FREE virtual evenings for tweens and teens who previously participated in any STREAM Girls program anywhere in Pennsylvania!  \n\n\n\nVirtually hang out with fellow STREAM Girls across the state and over the screen during hands-on activities\, a live panel with female-identifying professionals in STREAM\, new resources to hit the water near you (fly-fishing and fly-tying)\, and tips/tricks on being a STREAM trailblazer in your local community! All participants will be mailed a small “swag bag” of educational and recreational giveaways. The first 60 youth to register and attend will receive a special STREAM Girls bucket hat. \n\n\n\nNOTE: Adults and youth should complete the same registration form. You must pre-register to receive the connection information.\n\n\n\nCost: Free.\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a lecture by Carolyn Finney\, Ph.D.\, a storyteller\, author\, and cultural geographer deeply interested in issues related to identity\, difference\, creativity\, and resilience. \n\n\n\nCarolyn is grounded in both artistic and intellectual ways of knowing — she pursued an acting career for eleven years\, but five years of backpacking trips through Africa and Asia and living in Nepal changed the course of her life. Motivated by these experiences\, Carolyn returned to school after a 15-year absence to complete a B.A.\, M.A. (gender and environmental issues in Kenya and Nepal)\, and Ph.D. (where she was a Fulbright and a Canon National Science Scholar Fellow).  \n\n\n\nAlong with public speaking\, writing\, media engagements\, consulting\, and teaching\, she served on the U.S. National Parks Advisory Board for eight years. Her first book\, Black Faces\, White Spaces: Reimagining the Relationship of African Americans to the Great Outdoors\, was released in 2014. Recent publications include Self-Evident: Reflections on the Invisibility of Black Bodies in Environmental Histories and The Perils of Being Black in Public: We are all Christian Cooper and George Floyd. \n\n\n\nShe is currently working on a performance piece about John Muir (The N Word: Nature Revisited) as part of a Mellon residency at the New York Botanical Gardens and is the new columnist at the Earth Island Journal. Whenever the weather forecast calls for snow and ice\, PennDot and local municipalities’ road crews go to work to treat roadways before a storm and then plow and  clear them afterwards. Road salt is one of their tools. It melts the snow and ice and helps to make the streets\, roads and highways safer to drive on. Motorists almost take for granted that the roads will be cleared and salt will be used to help do it. PennDot applies some 800\,000 tons of road salt each year. The hazy white streaks left on paved surfaces and even sidewalks and parking lots are a testament to the salt that was used. But road salt doesn’t just melt snow and ice. It creeps into the soil and can get into waterways and have a negative impact on aquatic life and plants. The first 20 teachers registered from the two specific regions (10 each) mentioned above will receive $50 stipends for their participation. Two hours of Act 48 continuing education hours are available for Pennsylvania Certified Teachers. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance an existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nJoin this professional development event to learn about the WikiWatershed Toolkit of resources\, specifically Model My Watershed and Monitor My Watershed\, to help you accomplish your instructional goals. \n\n\n\nThe Stroud Center and ShoreRivers have received a National Science Foundation grant (Resolving Sediment Connectivity Between Rivers and Estuaries by Tracking Particles with their Microbial Genetic Signature) which includes additional funding to support Pennsylvania and Maryland teachers in applying these workshop concepts and tools in their classrooms. Over the next few years this funding also supports pilot curricular collaborations\, including school visits and field experiences. Native flowering plants\, shrubs\, and trees are those that originated and developed in our region\, unlike species introduced from other parts of the world. Think goldenrod\, winterberry\, and sycamore versus purple loosestrife\, barberry\, and callery pear. Native plants are important not only for local wildlife\, they are critical to restoring our streams and rivers\, and all the critters that call our waterways home.   \n\n\n\nJohn Williamson of TeamAg\, Inc.\, plants a sycamore seedling in the Overlook Park forest buffer. TeamAg works with the Stroud Center on dozens of farm conservation projects each year. Photo: Lancaster Clean Water Partners\n\n\n\nNew to this year’s festival is an 8-acre native habitat restoration area at Overlook Park in Manheim Township featuring trees\, shrubs\, and flowers that enhance nearby wetlands and a small stream that flows to the Little Conestoga Creek. Developed by Stroud Water Research Center\, Manheim Township\, the Alliance for the Chesapeake\, Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, Lancaster Clean Water Partners\, and many other partners\, this project is part of a countywide campaign to protect clean fresh water by planting over 1 million trees and shrubs on 6\,000 acres of streamside areas on farms\, parks\, and residential and business areas throughout the county.  \n\n\n\nLamonte Garber\, the Stroud Center’s watershed restoration coordinator\, will give a tour of the project to visitors who attend the festival. \n\n\n\nMark your calendar for Saturday\, April 30\, and we will see you there! \n\n\n\nVolunteer to Care for Native PlantsYou can help us nurture the new plants at Overlook Park. Walk-in participants are not permitted due to COVID-19 safety and a limited number of canoeing seats. \n\n\n\nGirl Scout Cadettes (grades 6-8)\, join Stroud Water Research Center for a discovery-based\, on-the-water canoeing adventure on a reservoir teeming with aquatic life! Earn requirements for your Think Like a Citizen Scientist Award (TLACS) while paddling the lake at the beautiful Marsh Creek State Park\, exploring freshwater habitats essential to all life\, diving into shoreline water chemistry experiments\, collecting real citizen science data\, and becoming an empowered protector of your watershed. \n\n\n\n4-hour program duration includes paddling safety instruction\, loading/unloading boats\, shoreline stops\, as well as on-the-water canoeing time. All essential canoeing equipment\, including canoes\, life jackets\, paddles\, First Aid Kits\, and dry bags\, will be provided. All participants receive a free Stroud Center Education Programs fun patch\, but the TLACS Award Badge itself is NOT included and should be purchased separately by participants through their local Girl Scout Council. Before or following the program\, participants are welcome to picnic or hike along the park’s vast trail network throughout forests\, fields\, and wetlands. \n\n\n\nNOTE: This program only earns requirements for the Think Like a Citizen Scientist Award\, one of two components of the Think Like a Citizen Scientist STEM Journey. Tailored to after-school and out-of-school education settings but open to all formal and nonformal educators\, this hands-on professional development workshop will immerse educators in STEM activities on land and in water to help them actively engage youth of all ages in real-world\, place-based environmental problem-solving.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will receive their own copy of Aquatic WILD K–12 Curriculum & Activity Guide\, dive into outdoor field investigations on watershed health\, discover the lessons learned during programming with 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC)\, and wade into a curricular framework (Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience framework) to set their programs up for success! \n\n\n\nTo receive an Aquatic WILD K–12 Curriculum & Activity Guide\, participants are required to attend both the virtual training (Thursday\, June 16\, 2022\, 1 – 3 p.m. EDT) and in-person training (Tuesday\, June 21\, 2022\, 9 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. EDT). \n\n\n\nAs an approved Act 48 provider\, the Stroud Center can provide up to 8 Act 48 hours to Pennsylvania certified teachers who attend this professional development experience. \n\n\n\nThis professional development opportunity is made possible by an eeBLUE grant and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Please contact Watershed Education Specialist David Kline. \n\n\n\nCOVID-19 Safety Protocols  \n\n\n\n💧 The in-person portion of this workshop (June 21) will take place entirely outdoors RAIN OR SHINE under the shade of a pavilion and on nature trails in our streamside forest except for access to indoor restrooms in the Stroud Center Moorhead Environmental Center or under extreme weather conditions (e.g.\, high heat index\, thunderstorms). \n\n\n\n💧 Face masks with proper fit (over nose\, cheeks\, and chin) are currently REQUIRED when indoors at Stroud Water Research Center\, including inside restrooms or if activities must shift indoors due to extreme weather. Face masks are currently OPTIONAL when outdoors at Stroud Water Research Center. This may shift to a requirement based on COVID-19 surges in the best interest and safety of all participants. SUMMARY:Getting Hands-On Integrating Environmental Education
DESCRIPTION:When: Thursday\, June 23\, 2022\, 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m.Where: Bayard Rustin High School\, 1100 Shiloh Rd\, West Chester\, PA 19382.Who: K–12 computer science teachers and administrators\, special educators and administrators\, STEM teachers and administrators\, coaches\, curriculum directors\, librarians\, and media specialists. Six hours of Act 48 are available for Pennsylvania Certified Teachers.Cost: Free. Participants will receive instructional supplies to use in their classrooms and a $100 stipend.\n\n\n\nRegistration is limited to the first 25 participants. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a full day workshop at Bayard Rustin High School and Goose Creek. Attendees will work through the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE) framework while furthering their own knowledge of environmental literacy and stewardship.  \n\n\n\nEducators will go outdoors to engage in a hands-on learning experience while developing the skills to integrate MWEE into their own classrooms and schools.
