DESCRIPTION:Join us for three 2-hour online sessions and one 6-hour in-person session to dive deeper into the Pa. MWEE framework and Pennsylvania Science\, Technology & Engineering\, Environmental Literacy\, and Sustainability (STEELS) standards toward becoming a Pa. MWEE Certified Facilitator. Investigation of local environmental issues and outdoor field experiences are included in a model MWEE. \n\n\n\nWhen: Three virtual sessions and one in-person session (all four are required):  \n\n\n\n\nVirtual session on Monday\, October 16\, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. \n\n\n\nVirtual session on Monday\, October 23\, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. \n\n\n\nVirtual session on Monday\, October 30\, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. \n\n\n\nIn-person session on Friday\, November 3 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. \n\n\n\n\nWhere: Location of the in-person session is to be determined and will be central to the majority of the registrants. \n\n\n\nAudience: Formal and nonformal educators who have already completed their Pa. The event is a collaboration between Stroud Water Research Center and our partner\, the Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN) at the University of Delaware.  \n\n\n\nAfter the film\, a panel of experts from DENIN and the Stroud Center will engage with the audience and offer insights into the local work underway to protect and improve our waters. \n\n\n\nAbout the PartnershipDENIN and the Stroud Center are linked through our people — colleagues working together for research and education — and also by the focus of what we study. The Stroud Center’s emphasis on freshwater science starts in the headwaters and extends downstream toward the coast. Two hours of Act 48 are available for Pennsylvania Certified Teachers. A certificate of participation will be provided upon request.\n\n\n\nCost: $10. Submit the registration form and then make the payment.\n\n\n\nDeadline to register: 5 p.m. EST on March 5.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\nPay Workshop Fee\n\n\n\n\nOutdoor learning spaces benefit water quality and wildlife habitat and provide meaningful outdoor learning opportunities for teachers and their K–12 students.  \n\n\n\nIn this workshop\, participants will hear directly from elementary through high school educators who have created outdoor learning spaces at their schools\, and from Stroud Center education staff. They will discuss the process of creating outdoor learning spaces\, from design and building to lesson implementation.  \n\n\n\nPresenters will also share tips on how to get started\, how to find funding\, what design tools to use\, and how to successfully communicate with key staff in the district.  \n\n\n\nResources and a recording of the webinar will be shared after the workshop with all registrants. \n\n\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will receive information about tools and resources available for outdoor learning space design and implementation.\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn about successful models of increasing equitable access to meaningful outdoor learning spaces for teachers and their K–12 students through the design of the spaces.

DESCRIPTION:What: Aquatic insect ecology workshop with an opportunity to take taxonomic certification exams.When: Course runs May 13 through 16\, 2024; Taxonomic Certification Program exams will be offered on May 16.Where: Laurel Community Center\, 4100 NC 212 Highway\, Marshall\, NC 28753. \n\n\n\nAquatic Insect Ecology Workshop\n\n\n\nAquatic insects (benthic macroinvertebrates) play key roles in many regulatory water quality programs in North Carolina and the Southeast. These insects have been used by regulatory agencies to assess water pollution and trends in stream health since the mid-1970s. Many metrics have been developed to make the use of these data effective and understandable to non-biologists.  \n\n\n\nBenthic insects are proposed as tools for the determination of stream restoration effectiveness and project prioritization by regulatory agencies. Despite the value of this group of organisms in regulatory programs\, very little is generally known about these insects as valuable regulatory tools. In addition\, we will examine:  \n\n\n\n\nHow scientists forecast bloom severity in Lake Erie. \n\n\n\nHow activity on land has resulted in changes in the water quality of Lake Erie tributaries that feed these blooms.\n\n\n\nWhat actions are being taken to improve water quality.\n\n\n\nWhat individuals can do to help.\n\n\n\n\nAbout Laura JohnsonLaura Johnson is director of the National Center for Water Quality Research at Heidelberg University\, which is known for its long-term monitoring of streams and rivers throughout the region. Results from this monitoring are used to forecast the algal blooms in Lake Erie\, assess the primary sources of nutrient and sediment pollution in Ohio’s watersheds\, and track the success of various land management strategies. The center is also monitoring an innovative pilot watershed approach to assess conservation practices in the headwaters of the Blanchard River and a portion of the wetlands in the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program. Under her guidance since 2016\, the lab continues to set the gold standard for research in nonpoint source pollution in watersheds.

State and federal agency staff; academic faculty; high school\, undergraduate\, and graduate students; and researchers from environmental NGOs and watershed organizations have attended previous workshops.\n\n\n\nCost: $135 per person.\n\n\n\nRegistration is required and limited to 24 participants.\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nEnviroDIY empowers researchers with innovative digital and electronic tools and training that enable cost-effective and customizable environmental measurements. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will help you learn the skills necessary to assemble\, program\, and deploy a water monitoring station\, but with the understanding that the DIY journey has just begun! We can’t cover the wide world of DIY technologies in a single workshop\, but we’ll give you the foundational knowledge and resources to continue learning on your own. \n\n\n\nWhat Will the Workshop Cover?\n\n\n\n\nProgramming electronic data loggers and connecting them to environmental sensors.\n\n\n\nTransmitting data from data loggers to web-based data portals via cellular radio.\n\n\n\nAssembling data loggers\, sensors\, cellular radios\, and solar panels into monitoring stations.\n\n\n\nDeploying\, maintaining\, and troubleshooting monitoring stations.\n\n\n\n\nWhat Are the Prerequisites?\n\n\n\nYou should answer yes to all the following questions and be comfortable using spreadsheet software. You don’t need prior computer programming experience. \n\n\n\n\nDo you need more customized or less expensive monitoring equipment than commercial vendors provide?\n\n\n\nDo you enjoy learning hands-on electronic skills\, computer coding\, and web-based tools?\n\n\n\nAre you motivated to continue learning DIY skills using internet resources?\n\n\n\nCan you accommodate the extra work required for DIY versus commercially available products?\n\n\n\n\nWhat Do I Need to Bring?\n\n\n\nWe loan attendees all the electronics and hardware needed to follow the classroom curriculum. You should wear comfortable clothes and shoes for walking trails along White Clay Creek. The Leaf Pack Network promotes inquiry-based interdisciplinary watershed education.
