Touch slimy rocks and crawling freshwater macroinvertebrates\, learning how they and sediments tell the story of stream health.\n\n\n\nThe Rock Pack Experiment is a fun\, hands-on research tool for all students and citizens of all ages\, demonstrating the interconnectedness between our actions on land and life in streams. Rock Pack promotes interdisciplinary watershed education by allowing students to conduct and design their own experiments and apply their knowledge to protect local watersheds. \n\n\n\nJoin us at our workshop and we’ll show you how!\n\n\n\nSpend part of the day with us on Montana State University’s campus exploring Wally Byam Grove and learning how to place and remove rock packs!\n\n\n\nDuring this workshop\, participants will receive an overview of stream ecology\, geomorphology\, and animals as ecosystem engineers. Getting our boots in the water\, we’ll examine and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates that live within rock packs from a local stream. We’ll also give you great tools\, teaching activities\, and ideas to incorporate the workshop content into your own indoor or outdoor classroom\, programs\, or monitoring initiatives! \n\n\n\nAt the workshop you will receive: \n\n\n\n\nRock Pack kit give-aways!\n\n\n\nLunch\n\n\n\nTour of MSU’s ecology labs\n\n\n\nHands-on experience deploying rock packs in a stream\n\n\n\nTraining in macroinvertebrate identification\n\n\n\nFun teaching techniques to use in your classroom and community\n\n\n\nOne-on-one with the experts!\n\n\n\nContinuing education credits (for a fee)\n\n\n\n\nDid You Know?\n\n\n\nHydropsychid caddisflies (Trichoptera) are a group of globally distributed aquatic insects that spin silk mesh nets that they use to filter feed. These silk mesh nets are important ecosystem engineering structures in flowing waters that can regulate sediment erosion\, food particle delivery by altering near-bed current velocities\, and enhance habitat availability for other macroinvertebrates. Look for them in your rock packs! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA short film has been produced to take a closer look at caddisflies and their ecosystem engineering. This film is based upon work by Lindsey Albertson\, Ph.D. (Montana State University) and Melinda Daniels (Stroud Water Research Center) supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1557032. Part 2 of this workshop series is an August 13 canoe event on the Octoraro in which participants will apply what they’ve learned about testing water to a new stream while also learning about the history of the Octoraro\, Susquehanna\, and Chesapeake watersheds. Participants may attend one or both parts of this workshop series. \n\n\n\nAre you looking for new resources to engage 21st century learners? DESCRIPTION:A One-Day Conference Highlighting the Brandywine-Christina Watershed\n\n\n\nMendenhall Inn\, Mendenhall\, Pennsylvania\n\n\n\n$25 per person; $10 students (with valid ID). \n\n\n\nAs one of the most historic small watersheds in the nation\, the Brandywine-Christina supplies drinking water to over a half million people in Delaware and Pennsylvania and supports $1.6 billion in annual economic activity and over 100\,000 jobs. \n\n\n\nThis conference will include highlights from the newly released Brandywine-Christina State of the Watershed Report and showcase projects implemented by partners throughout the watershed. Following lunch the conference attendees are invited to attend a field tour to have a first-hand view of innovative agriculture practices and discuss water supply options and strategies for protecting source water in the watershed. DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Penn State Environment and Natural Resources Institute \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, March 20 at 12 p.m.Where: Room 102\, Forest Resources Building\, University Park\, PA\, or online using Zoom. Lunch will be provided to those who attend in person. \n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center associate scientist\, Melinda Daniels\, Ph.D.\, will present the next Penn State Water Insights Seminar. \n\n\n\n\nWatershed restoration has always presented an opportunity for addressing both ecological and human resiliency concerns\, yet quantifying and communicating the connections between the two has been challenging. This has resulted in segmented\, piecemeal restoration funding with limited ecological or human resiliency benefits. We appear to be in a phase of opportunity to produce larger\, connected\, holistic watershed restoration with clear and quantifiable improvements in both human and ecological resiliency. In this session we showcase a demonstration watershed restoration effort funded following Hurricane Sandy that employs multiple in-channel\, floodplain\, and hillslope strategies to restore hydrologic and water quality function to a headwater tributary of the Brandywine Creek watershed with dual goals of human and ecological resiliency to large magnitude disturbance events as well as persistent climate and land use change pressures. \n\n\n\n\nView the list of seminars in this series and links to recordings of past seminars

SUMMARY:Presentation at the Philadelphia Water Summit
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday March 7 at the Philadelphia Flower Show\, with support from the William Penn Foundation and assistance from habitheque\, the Philadelphia Horticultural Society will bring together multidisciplinary visionaries to explore clean water solutions in streams\, urban centers\, and even outer space! \n\n\n\nFeatured speakers include environmental leaders — from artists to astronauts to scientists — including John Jackson\, Ph.D.\, Stroud Center entomologist and senior research scientist. Representatives from two companies from the Stroud Center’s design/build team for the Moorhead Environmental Complex will also speak: Michele Adams\, founder of Meliora Environmental Design\, and Chris Streb\, ecological engineer for Biohabitats. \n\n\n\nForty-six years years after the passage of the Clean Water Act\, the speakers will discuss why we still have clean water crises in the United States\, how to forge meaningful connections to the natural world among young urbanites\, how floating wetlands in urban rivers can reduce water pollution\, and so much more.

SUMMARY:School’s Out Winter Stream Camp
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 19\, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.\n\n\n\nAUDIENCE: Children ages 7 – 11. Maximum of 20 children.COST: $40 per child. Add before care (8 to 9 a.m.) for $5\, after care (3 to 5 p.m.) for $10. \n\n\n\nCome to Stroud Water Research Center to enjoy the magic of the stream and forest in winter; though the trees are lying dormant\, there is still a lot to explore! At Winter Stream Camp\, campers will investigate the stream in its icy state and discover what critters might be hiding inside\, look for birds that have stayed for the winter\, and hunt for animal tracks along the streamside habitat. Test your wilderness survival skills by mimicking forest animals with a hand-made den to keep out the cold\, and play some team building games.

DESCRIPTION:Professional Development Workshop\n\n\n\nAUDIENCE: Middle and high school science curriculum coordinators\, teachers and coaches; special education coordinators\, teachers and coaches; and administrators. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is a partnership between Stroud Water Research Center and the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU). Participants can receive ACT 48 hours. \n\n\n\nCOST: Free attendance and ACT 48 hours for CCIU subscribers (Chester County public school district employees); non-subscribers (all other participants) must pay a registration fee if they want ACT 48 hours. \n\n\n\nAre you looking for new resources to engage 21st century learners? Do you use PA Core academic standards in Environment & Ecology\, and in Science\, Technology\, & Engineering? Participants will explore new technological tools to support student learning about watersheds\, stream health\, and water quality. Resources featured in this workshop include the WikiWatershed.org toolkit and the Water Quality mobile app. \n\n\n\nParticipants are encouraged to bring their laptops and mobile devices. Laptops will also be provided. Participants will need to purchase the Water Quality App for their device: \n\n\n\n\nFor Apple devices (iPhone\, iPad\, and iPod Touch)\n\n\n\n\nThere is a related workshop\, Model My Watershed: 21st Century Tools\, in the morning. Participants staying for both the morning and afternoon sessions will only have 30 minutes for lunch. It is recommended to pack a lunch.
