More than 1\,740\,000 students live and learn in Pennsylvania and the future well-being of our watersheds will soon rest in their hands. \n\n\n\nStakeholders across Pennsylvania are working to support students to graduate with the knowledge and skills to protect and restore their local watershed through the participation in Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE). MWEEs are learner-centered experiences that focus on investigations into local environmental issues that lead to informed action and civic engagement. \n\n\n\nMWEEs depend on the facilitation and support of both school and non-formal\, field-based educators for the experiences to be holistic and impactful. This workshop will help prepare non-formal environmental education providers to partner with K-12 classroom teachers on an MWEE. \n\n\n\nThis workshop has been designed to provide a deep understanding of the MWEE as a vehicle for advancing environmental literacy and stewardship while increasing standards-based student achievement. \n\n\n\nBonus! The workshop will be paired with an optional second day focused on enhancing your hands-on water education skills including macroinvertebrate sampling and identification\, water chemistry\, and stream habitat assessment. \n\n\n\n\nFunding made possible through generous B-WET grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA Grant #NA17NMF4570274).\n\n\n\nThese workshops will be facilitated by trainers from Stroud Water Research Center\, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation\, DCNR-Bureau of Pennsylvania State Parks\, Penn State Extension\, and Millersville University.\n\n\n\n\nQUESTIONS? SUMMARY:Rock Pack Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Where: Montana State University\, Bozeman\, MontanaAudience: Elementary\, middle\, and high school teachers\, environmental educators\, and interested citizens.Cost: FREE!Spaces are limited! Register by August 13. Contact Tara Muenz from Stroud Water Research Center for more information or to register. \n\n\n\nHow Can Packs of Rocks Spark Stream Exploration?\n\n\n\nHands-on experience! Touch slimy rocks and crawling freshwater macroinvertebrates\, learning how they and sediments tell the story of stream health.\n\n\n\nThe Rock Pack Experiment is a fun\, hands-on research tool for all students and citizens of all ages\, demonstrating the interconnectedness between our actions on land and life in streams. Rock Pack promotes interdisciplinary watershed education by allowing students to conduct and design their own experiments and apply their knowledge to protect local watersheds. \n\n\n\nJoin us at our workshop and we’ll show you how!\n\n\n\nSpend part of the day with us on Montana State University’s campus exploring Wally Byam Grove and learning how to place and remove rock packs!\n\n\n\nDuring this workshop\, participants will receive an overview of stream ecology\, geomorphology\, and animals as ecosystem engineers. Getting our boots in the water\, we’ll examine and identify aquatic macroinvertebrates that live within rock packs from a local stream. We’ll also give you great tools\, teaching activities\, and ideas to incorporate the workshop content into your own indoor or outdoor classroom\, programs\, or monitoring initiatives! \n\n\n\nAt the workshop you will receive: \n\n\n\n\nRock Pack kit give-aways!\n\n\n\nLunch\n\n\n\nTour of MSU’s ecology labs\n\n\n\nHands-on experience deploying rock packs in a stream\n\n\n\nTraining in macroinvertebrate identification\n\n\n\nFun teaching techniques to use in your classroom and community\n\n\n\nOne-on-one with the experts!\n\n\n\nContinuing education credits (for a fee)\n\n\n\n\nDid You Know?\n\n\n\nHydropsychid caddisflies (Trichoptera) are a group of globally distributed aquatic insects that spin silk mesh nets that they use to filter feed. These silk mesh nets are important ecosystem engineering structures in flowing waters that can regulate sediment erosion\, food particle delivery by altering near-bed current velocities\, and enhance habitat availability for other macroinvertebrates. Look for them in your rock packs! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA short film has been produced to take a closer look at caddisflies and their ecosystem engineering. This film is based upon work by Lindsey Albertson\, Ph.D. (Montana State University) and Melinda Daniels (Stroud Water Research Center) supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1557032. Any opinions\, findings\, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.

SUMMARY:Penn State Water Insights Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Penn State Environment and Natural Resources Institute \n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesday\, March 20 at 12 p.m.Where: Room 102\, Forest Resources Building\, University Park\, PA\, or online using Zoom. Lunch will be provided to those who attend in person. \n\n\n\nStroud Water Research Center associate scientist\, Melinda Daniels\, Ph.D.\, will present the next Penn State Water Insights Seminar. \n\n\n\n\nWatershed restoration has always presented an opportunity for addressing both ecological and human resiliency concerns\, yet quantifying and communicating the connections between the two has been challenging. This has resulted in segmented\, piecemeal restoration funding with limited ecological or human resiliency benefits. We appear to be in a phase of opportunity to produce larger\, connected\, holistic watershed restoration with clear and quantifiable improvements in both human and ecological resiliency. In this session we showcase a demonstration watershed restoration effort funded following Hurricane Sandy that employs multiple in-channel\, floodplain\, and hillslope strategies to restore hydrologic and water quality function to a headwater tributary of the Brandywine Creek watershed with dual goals of human and ecological resiliency to large magnitude disturbance events as well as persistent climate and land use change pressures. \n\n\n\n\nView the list of seminars in this series and links to recordings of past seminars

SUMMARY:Slimy Leaves for Healthy Streams: A Training in the Leaf Pack Network
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 109:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.Stroud Water Research CenterFREE! Registration is required. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is intended for middle and high school teachers and environmental educators. Bring your own lunch. \n\n\n\nHow can clumps of slimy leaves spark stream exploration?\n\n\n\nThe Leaf Pack Experiment is a fun\, hands-on research and outreach tool for citizens of all ages and teachers\, demonstrating how our actions on land impact life in streams and water quality. Leaf Pack promotes inquiry-based interdisciplinary watershed education and engages diverse audiences in conducting their own experiments\, gathering relevant ecological data\, exploring food webs\, learning classification skills\, using technology to share data\, comparing data with those of other communities and applying that information to protect local watersheds. \n\n\n\nJoin us at our workshop\, we’ll show you how!\n\n\n\nParticipants will receive an overview of stream ecology and watershed concepts based on research done at Stroud Water Research Center. Taking our boots to the stream\, we’ll experience hands-on examination of leaf packs with live aquatic macroinvertebrates\, including their identification\, and take a look at the Leaf Pack Network® website. \n\n\n\nLeaf Pack Experiment Stream Ecology Kits can be found at https://leafpacknetwork.org/resources\n\n\n\nAt the workshop you will receive: \n\n\n\n\nLeaf Pack kit give-a ways!\n\n\n\nTour of the Stroud Center’s research labs and LEED-Platinum certified building\n\n\n\nHands-on experience deploying and retrieving leaf packs from the stream\n\n\n\nTraining in macroinvertebrate ID\n\n\n\nFUN teaching techniques to bring to your classes!\n\n\n\nCertificate of participation (volunteer hours or towards teacher professional development credits)\n\n\n\n\nThis workshop is sponsored by a grant from the Consortium for Scientific Assistance to Watersheds.
