SUMMARY:Engage Students in Stream Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:This professional development workshop is for formal and nonformal K-12 and college educators interested in learning stream monitoring techniques and how to engage their students in monitoring activities. It is also open to teachers who have already registered or plan to register their classes for Stroud Center field trips in the 2017-2018 school year. \n\n\n\nStudents Can Do Citizen Science\n\n\n\nThis six hour teacher professional development workshop will guide you through activities and considerations to engage your students in citizen science stream and restoration monitoring activities. \n\n\n\nField and classroom activities include: \n\n\n\n\nWhat is citizen science and how it can be tied to the curriculum?\n\n\n\nMacroinvertebrates as a bioindicator of stream health.\n\n\n\nWater chemistry.\n\n\n\nStream habitat and flow.\n\n\n\nRiparian tree planting monitoring.\n\n\n\nRegistration and Act 48 hours\n\n\n\n\nRegistration fee only $10. Pizza and salad lunch provided.Dress to go outside and get into the stream to collect data. Boots are provided. \n\n\n\nChester County teachers will receive six hours of Act 48 through the CCIU. Teachers from other counties and nonformal educators will receive a certificate indicating six hours of professional development from the Stroud Center.
