SUMMARY:HerStory in STREAM
DESCRIPTION:What: A free\, four-part program empowering today’s girls in freshwater science\, technology\, recreation\, engineering\, art\, and math (STREAM). Please note! We ask that you attend at least two of the first three sessions (September 16\, October 7\, November 4). You must also attend the final session on December 2\, 2023.\n\n\n\nWhere: Various locations; see session listing below.\n\n\n\nAudience: We welcome Chester County\, Pennsylvania\, middle to high school (ages roughly 11–17) cis girls\, trans girls\, nonbinary youth\, gender-nonconforming youth\, and/or all youth who experience girlhood as part of their unique journey.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. Registration is required and limited to 40 participants. Please note: Registration for Session 2 is limited to 20 participants. \n\n\n\n\nThis program is full. \n\n\n\n\nDownload Flyer\n\n\n\n\nJoin Stroud Water Research Center for HerStory in STREAM\, a free four-season environmental education program (one session per season) that empowers today’s youth to become tomorrow’s leaders in freshwater science\, technology\, recreation\, engineering\, art\, and math (STREAM). By joining us\, you will complete this program\, which includes the following: \n\n\n\n\nIntroductory canoe paddling knowledge.\n\n\n\nExperience with more than six different STREAM subjects.\n\n\n\nPresentation\, art\, or activity-based project about your science passions.\n\n\n\nCertificate of completion. \n\n\n\nIdeas for future programs\, camps\, and internships.\n\n\n\n\nShadow women watershed scientists during hands-on outdoor experiences with freshwater careers\, canoeing\, water chemistry\, aquatic insects\, stream habitats\, environmental engineering\, community science water quality monitoring\, and so much more! \n\n\n\nHerStory in STREAM brings together young female trailblazers for three engaging programs that lead to the the exciting STREAM Summit: \n\n\n\n\nCanoeing and Nature Hike Session: Saturday\, September 16\, 2023\, 1:30–5:30 p.m. at Marsh Creek State Park. Paddle a lake teeming with aquatic life\, observe local plants and wildlife on a beautiful hike\, and discover how YOU are connected to watershed health!\n\n\n\nSTREAM Girls — Stream Study and Fishing: Saturday\, October 7\, 2023\, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. at a Chester County location (TBA).  Join us for a fun-filled day to study the chemistry\, macroinvertebrates\, and fluvial geomorphology of a stream while learning the basics of fly fishing. Get boots-in-the-water experience\, wading in the stream to get up close with freshwater life and science..\n\n\n\nForestry and Technology: Saturday\, November 4\, 2023\, 1:30–5:30 p.m. at the Stroud Center. What does technology have to do with forests or stream health? Learn how to use mapping websites to model rainfall and learn about the impacts of different land cover in Chester County. Learn the important role of trees in maintaining healthy watersheds. Then get outside to explore the Stroud Center’s acres of woods and take action to help the earth as we plant trees!\n\n\n\nSTREAM Summit Session: Saturday\, December 2\, 2023\, 1:30–5:30 p.m. at the Stroud Center. Gather with fellow changemakers\, complete a stewardship action project for healthy water (e.g.\, a tree planting or environmental awareness project)\, and share your own story as part of the future of fresh water! Friends\, families\, and community members are all welcome to attend.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Please contact Kathryn Metzker. \n\n\n\nFunded by:

SUMMARY:Expanding Meaningful Environmental and Watershed Literacy With Geospatial Technology Tools and Practice
DESCRIPTION:What: Professional development for K–12 educators in Pennsylvania.\n\n\n\nWhen: 5–7:30 p.m. on Thursdays\, September 28; October 5\, 12\, 19\, 26; and November 2\, and a final meeting on Thursday\, November 16 from 5–8 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Online.\n\n\n\nCost: Free. Participants may be eligible to receive a stipend and up to 30 hours of Act 48.\n\nAll assignments and surveys\, with the exception of the post-implementation survey\, must be submitted by November 22\, 2023 to be eligible for stipend payment. The post-implementation survey must be completed before distribution of Act 48 hours.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration closes on Friday\, September 8\, 2023. Enrollment will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis; space is limited. Confirmation\, prerequisite assignments\, and course site login information will be sent on or before September 16\, 2023. \n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\nHave you been searching for the missing link that helps bridge the gap between delivering environmental content and developing environmental literacy? Do you want to help your students understand their connections to their local environment but are limited by established curriculum sequences? Have COVID-19 restrictions on classroom and lab experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations using the environment as an integrative concept? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies to explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena\, such as environmental issues\, has been demonstrated as a highly effective method for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\n\n\n\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\n\n\n\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental or environmental justice issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nInvestigate environmental or environmental justice issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n\n\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices. \n\n\n\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments. Participants are required to do the following to be eligible for the stipend and the full allotment of Act 48 credit hours: \n\n\n\n\nComplete the entire professional development sequence. \n\n\n\nComplete and submit all course assignments.\n\n\n\nComplete the pre-course\, post-course\, and post-classroom implementation surveys.\n\n\n\nDesign and implement an inquiry-based unit plan which utilizes select GIS tools within the first eight weeks of the 2023–2024 school year.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Tamara Peffer\, tpeffer@pa.gov\, 717-772-0842.
