SUMMARY:Expanding Meaningful Environmental and Watershed Literacy With Geospatial Technology Tools and Practice
DESCRIPTION:What: Seven-week professional development series. \n\n\n\nWho: K–12 formal and nonformal educators.\n\n\n\nWhen: Tuesdays from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on March 3\, 10\, 17\, 24\, 31; April 7 and 14\, 2026. Classroom implementation\, reflections\, and final survey due May 22\, 2026.   \n\n\n\nWhere: Synchronous online learning via Zoom. \n\n\n\nCost: Free for all participants. Pennsylvania state-certified K–12 teachers are eligible for up to 30 hours of Act 48. Pennsylvania formal and nonformal K–12 educators may also be eligible for a stipend.\n\n\n\nRegistration closes on Monday\, March 2\, 2026 at 5 p.m. Space is limited\, and enrollment will be offered on a first-come\, first-served basis.\n\n\n\nAll assignments and surveys must be submitted by Friday\, May 22\, 2026 to be eligible for stipend payment. A post-implementation survey must be completed before the distribution of Act 48 hours or participation certificates.\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for this event has closed. \n\n\n\nHave you been searching for the missing link that helps bridge the gap between delivering environmental content and developing environmental literacy? Do you want to help your students understand their connections to their local environment but are limited by established curriculum sequences? Have residual COVID-19 restrictions on classroom\, lab\, and field experiences limited your ability to design real-world STEM explorations using the environment as an integrative concept? If you answered yes to any of these questions\, this is the professional development (PD) opportunity for you! \n\n\n\nUsing geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial technologies\, participants will explore complex interdisciplinary phenomena and environmental issues in their local watersheds\, while using examples from the Great Lakes Basin to provide a shared learning context. This place-based methodology has been demonstrated as a highly effective strategy for teachers and students to better understand connections within the natural world at all grade levels. \n\n\n\nConnecting spatial representation and explorations to local field-based inquiry further improves understanding in a tangible way while creating a sense of place and connection to the issue. Yet\, knowing which GIS tools to use and how to use them to enhance a new existing curriculum can initially be quite daunting to educators.  \n\n\n\nIn this PD experience\, you will learn to:  \n\n\n\n\nIdentify which GIS tools to use in an environmental or watershed literacy instructional unit that will be appropriate for your instructional grade level.\n\n\n\nIntegrate and adapt these tools into your classroom instruction.\n\n\n\nShare how GIS tools can be used to identify environmental issues within your district’s watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nInvestigate environmental issues within and outside your watershed boundaries.\n\n\n\nIdentify which classroom practices and GIS tools can be used for both place-based learning and expansion into the regional watershed and environmental literacy inquiries.\n\n\n\n\nProgram Details\n\n\n\nWe are seeking K–12 educators in Pennsylvania to participate in an innovative professional development series designed to enhance educators’ understanding and implementation of GIS tools\, watershed inquiry\, and environmental literacy in their classroom practices. \n\n\n\nThe PD structure includes 15 hours of synchronous instruction and 15–30 hours of asynchronous assignments. Participants are required to do the following to be eligible for the stipend and the full allotment of Act 48 credit hours: \n\n\n\n\nComplete the entire professional development sequence. \n\n\n\nComplete and submit all course assignments.\n\n\n\nComplete the pre-course\, post-course\, and post-classroom implementation surveys.\n\n\n\nDesign and implement an inquiry-based unit plan which utilizes select GIS tools within seven weeks of course completion.\n\n\n\n\nQuestions? DESCRIPTION:When: Tuesday\, March 31\, 2026 through Thursday\, April 2\, 2026 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.\n\n\n\nWhere: Days 1 and 2: Stroud Water Research Center\, 970 Spencer Road\, Avondale\, PA 19311\, Day 3: White Clay Creek Preserve.\n\n\n\nAudience: Formal and non-formal educators.\n\n\n\nAct 48: Up to 18 hours.\n\n\n\nCost: $100\, includes lunch. Out-of-town registrants can find affordable accommodations available nearby\, at their expense.\n\n\n\nRegistration is limited to 24 participants and closes at 5 p.m. on Monday\, March 23.\n\n\n\n\n\nPay Registration Fee\n\n\n\n\nSource to Sea is an immersive instructor training that prepares educators to lead students on a powerful journey from their local stream to the global ocean with a complete course called Source to Sea. Through a blend of engaging online learning and multi-day\, hands-on field experiences\, participants build real skills in stream ecology\, chemistry\, and biology while learning how to guide safe\, meaningful outdoor investigations. Educators leave confident in teaching students how to assess stream health\, understand human impacts on water quality\, and take action to protect freshwater ecosystems. \n\n\n\nDesigned for formal\, nonformal\, and PADI educators alike\, this training provides: \n\n\n\n\nAccess to the online course.\n\n\n\nSource to Sea curriculum and teaching materials.\n\n\n\nInvaluable experience with experts in the field.\n\n\n\nContinuous access to exclusive online resources after program completion.\n\n\n\n\nThis training will allow you to immediately bring a polished\, action-focused course to your school or program.
