This Brandywine River watershed flows from the Piedmont region of Pennsylvania into the Atlantic Coastal Plain in Delaware, where its lower portions are tidal.

The Brandywine River is a 6th order stream when it meets the Delaware River. To understand the differences and importance of streams and rivers in the watershed, the tributaries of this sub-watershed have been sorted into 3 categories, as follows:

• stream orders 1 and 2 are called headwaters;
• stream orders 3 and 4 are mid-sized streams;
• stream orders 5 and above are called rivers.
