The Biogeochemistry Group at Stroud Water Research Center is hiring a paid intern for summer assistance under the direction of Diana Oviedo Vargas, Ph.D. The intern will be trained and provided with experiences in many aspects of laboratory and fieldwork related to watershed biogeochemistry. The intern will work primarily at the Stroud Center in Avondale, Pa., and Chester and Lancaster Counties field sites. The intern will work closely with staff scientists and other interns at the Stroud Center.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with general laboratory activities such as water, soil, and sediment sample processing and analysis using methods that include gravimetry, ion and gas chromatography, spectrophotometry, fluorometry, pH titration, automated chromatography, etc.
- Assist in field activities such as instrument maintenance, data download, and soil, water, and sediment sample collection and preservation.
Qualifications
- 18+ years of age; this position is best suited for people who have completed their sophomore year of college and above.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures and laboratory protocols for analytical chemistry techniques.
- Ability to perform physical activity outdoors in various challenging conditions (hot weather, invasive plants, mud, etc.).
- Ability to work with others (including landowners) and communicate effectively.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision, requiring personal initiative and a sense of responsibility for assuring satisfactory outcomes.
- Valid driver’s license and transportation for off-site work.
- Cell phone.
Preferred qualifications:
- Majoring in biology, chemistry, environmental science, soil science, or similar.
- Previous experience in analytical chemistry laboratory or similar.
Terms of Employment
- The starting date is negotiable, but it should ideally be by the end of May 2025. Employment will extend to mid-August, with the possibility of further extension depending on performance.
- This position will work approximately 24–40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, and is negotiable depending on available work.
- Pay is approximately $14 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. This is an hourly position that does not provide health or retirement benefits.
