Avondale, Pa. – On Thursday, April 15th, 2010, the Stroud Water Research Center’s Joan and Dick Stroud Memorial Lecture will feature Wade Davis. Named by the National Geographic Society as one of the Explorers for the Millennium, Davis has been described as “a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet, and passionate defender of all of life’s diversity.” His presentation, The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in a Modern World, based on his book of the same title, speaks to the legacy of humanity and what we risk as we face the loss of the Indigenous cultures that have learned to adapt to, rather than to master the landscape.

Davis is the recipient of numerous awards including The Gold Medal from the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. A prolific author, he has written eleven books, including One River, which was nominated for the 1997 Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction. His articles have appeared in publications including National Geographic, Outside, Omni, Harpers, Fortune, Men’s Journal, Condé Nast Traveler, Natural History, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. Among his film credits, Davis is featured with Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., in the IMAX documentary Grand Canyon Adventure, A River at Risk.

Held in memory of Joan and Dick Stroud, co-founders of the Stroud Water Research Center, the Stroud Memorial Lecture Series brings to the Center speakers who will both enlighten and entertain. Past speakers have included, Chairman, Waterkeeper Alliance, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Director of the Global Water Policy Project and author, Sandra Postel, and artist, author, activist, and the recipient of the National Wildlife Federation’s National Conservation Achievement Award, Subhankar Banerjee.
