The warm day did not deter drivers on June 11 — some of whom were driving cars without modern conveniences like air conditioning — from partaking in the Stroud Center’s Road Rally for Fresh Water.
The official Axalta Coating Systems Pace Car led the pack of drivers and navigators as they followed clues on an 80+ mile journey through watersheds in Chester and Lancaster counties. The halfway point was the Hawk Point Overlook, a viewing platform above the Susquehanna River at the Susquehannock State Park.
Only a few drivers got completely turned around before convening at the Finish Line Party reception at the privately owned Runnymede Sanctuary Trust. Co-sponsored by Period Architecture and Rittenhouse Builders, the Finish Line Party was an opportunity for guests to discuss their route, view the diverse collection of cars, enjoy a delicious dinner, and hear remarks by Distinguished Senior Research Scientist and Stroud Center President Dr. Bern Sweeney before the road rally awards ceremony.
John Nolan, corporate communications specialist for Axalta Coating Systems, presented the Grand Prize to a ’66 Sunbeam Tiger. This father-and-son team answered the most questions correctly. For those who were not quite as diligent, there was still a chance to win such prizes as Car Most Likely to Get Stuck in a Creek, Most Unique Car, Car that Takes the Least Amount of Water to Wash, and Most Directionally Challenged.
