Stroud Center Brings Watershed Learning to After-School Programs

800 450 Stroud Water Research Center

Empowering Young Minds

Students piece together a watershed map at an after-school education program.

Over the past few months, Stroud Water Research Center educators have been connecting elementary school students in Avondale and West Chester, Pennsylvania, with the wonders of local watersheds.

Through hands-on activities like Macroinvertebrate Mayhem and measuring rainwater infiltration, students are learning about stream health and stewardship using NOAA’s Meaningful Watershed Educational Experiences (MWEE) framework.

By weaving science into after-school programs, the Stroud Center is growing the next generation of freshwater champions.

Stroud Center programming addresses all elements of a MWEE but focuses on Outdoor Field Experiences. Even in the winter months, we still managed to get students outdoors to explore their school grounds, do some nature journaling, and learn about the role of trees in watershed health. Students loved being outside and engaging with these new topics in fun ways.
