The ionic composition of freshwater ecosystems varies widely with local geology. Anthropogenic changes to salinity regimes result in biodiversity shifts, indicating that salinity likely plays a role in determining where aquatic insect species can thrive.
This study is the first to compare aquatic insect physiological traits relevant to osmoregulation in a suite of species representing different lineages and, in some cases, know differences in salinity tolerances.
