West Chester, PA – On Thursday, February 24th, 2011, Trail Creek Outfitters and Stroud Water Research Center will host the nationally acclaimed 4th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival to benefit freshwater research.

Considered the largest film festival of its kind, the Wild & Scenic Film Festival opens the door for audiences to learn about their environment and how to engage in stewardship activities through a series of award-winning animations, documentaries, and independent films, some of which will be based on Stroud Water Research Center’s focus: fresh water.

Among the list of films is “The Greatest Migration,” which documents the 900-mile journey of Snake River salmon as they travel to reach their spawning grounds but swim ever closer to extinction as they are pushed to higher altitude by river dams.

On the lighter side is “The Animals Save the Planet: Energy Efficient Penguin,” featuring humorous claymation characters demonstrating how humans can live a greener lifestyle.

Perhaps fittingly, these films point to a need that Stroud Water Research Center is meeting. The only research institution of its kind, the Center employs a team of world-renowned scientists who study freshwater systems and provide data that can ultimately be used by governments, businesses, communities, and individuals to help solve water-quality issues.

“It is our hope that everyone who attends will walk away with, not only a greater understanding of and appreciation for the environment that sustains us,” said Dr. Bern Sweeney, director of Stroud Water Research Center, “but will also be energized to engage in environmental stewardship, even if that means something as simple as supporting the work we do at the Center.”

Thanks to local sponsors, attendees will be treated to beverages by Victory Brewing Company and refreshments by Talula’s Table, whose delectable dishes made from locally grown ingredients have earned the restaurant the title “The Toughest Table in America.”

The Wild & Scenic Film Festival is sponsored nationally by Patagonia, Inc., Clif Bar & Company, Osprey Packs, Inc., Klean Kanteen, Grist, and locally by Trail Creek Outfitters, Victory Brewing Company, Talula’s Table, Exelon, Kennett Square Environmental Council, and Nason Construction, Inc.

Sweeney added, “We are grateful to all of the event sponsors, and especially to Exelon for their generous support. Because of them and everyone who attends, we are able to fulfill our mission to advance knowledge and stewardship of fresh water through research and education.”

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. All proceeds benefit the Stroud Water Research Center.
