World Water Day 2026 was an exciting day at Stroud Water Research Center. On Saturday, March 21, more than 100 visitors explored the research, education, and watershed restoration work that protects fresh water.

How Big Is an Eel? You Might Be Surprised
Scientist Laura Zgleszewski demonstrated how researchers collect live fish to understand the health of the stream they came from. Visitors were astounded by the size of the eels and the abundance of fish collected in a small stretch of White Clay Creek.

Science in the Streamhouse
Indoors, visitors saw fish, crayfish, eels, and even a frog up close in a water tank. Marc Peipoch, Ph.D., assistant research scientist, pointed out the unique features of each animal. Did you know one local fish has a special jaw for attacking smaller fish? Visitors also saw the Stroud Center’s experimental streams flowing inside the Streamhouse.

Rubber Duckies for Science
The annual event wouldn’t be the same without the 50/50 duckie race in White Clay Creek. All participants left World Water Day with their ducks, and one lucky duck left with half of the race proceeds.

The local community and Stroud Center staff look forward to this annual open house, now in its fifth year. Here’s what a few of our visitors had to say:
“All the presenters were nice, helpful, and seemed to love what they are doing.”
“I really appreciate the willingness of the staff to entertain my questions. I appreciate the Lenape Garden, which respects the original people of this area. Please do this sort of Open House more often. This is a very special facility and staff!”
“I wish I had known about the Stroud Center years ago. ❤️”
