Stroud Water Research Center is honored to have received the Watershed Heroes Nonprofit Steward award from Tookany/Tacony-Frankford Watershed Partnership. TTF presented the award to Dave Arscott, Stephanie Bernasconi, Scott Ensign, and Rachel Johnson on October 19 during its 2022 Watershed Milestones Awards Ceremony at the iconic Globe Dye Works in Philadelphia.
TTF is one of many partners the Stroud Center is working with to provide training and support for volunteer watershed monitoring as part of the Delaware River Watershed Initiative.
Thanks to our partnership, an EnviroDIY monitoring station maintained by TTF volunteers detected salt spikes more concentrated than seawater in Tookany Creek in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania. With Stroud Center scientists interpreting the data, the discovery led to media coverage by the Philadelphia Inquirer, Smart Talk, CBS Philly, and others about the impacts of road salt pollution. The coverage caught the attention of legislators, and representatives from both the Stroud Center and TTF were invited to testify at a Philadelphia Streets and Services committee hearing.
TTF Executive Director Julie Slavet said, “TTF would not be able to engage with city leaders on important issues like chloride levels on our streets and in our waterways without the partnership of Stroud Water Research Center. We are thankful to collaborate with an organization with so much expertise and experience in communicating issues surrounding clean water. TTF could not make such a significant impact without dedicated partners like Stroud.”
