Did you know that 1 million plastic bottles are used every minute and 70% or more will end up in landfills and oceans? As we observe Plastic Free July, we want to take a moment to highlight a company that has made it their mission to fight ocean plastic pollution.
Open Water founders Nicole Doucet and Jess Page were students at the University of Miami when they saw a documentary on plastic pollution and heard a startling statistic: 1,500 plastic bottles are used every second. After graduation, they got to work finding an alternative to single-use plastic water bottles.
Pioneers in the canned water field, Open Water makes their bottles and cans from post-consumer recycled aluminum. So far, they have replaced the need for more than 3 million pounds of plastic.
Their aluminum bottles are a great alternative when it’s not possible to carry a reusable water bottle. Open Water provided a 100% recyclable alternative for golfers during Stroud Water Research Center’s Fore Fresh Water Golf Invitational, but only after we pledged to recycle all the bottles used on the course throughout the day.
