Introducing Salty Streams and Safer Streets
A New Middle School MWEE Curriculum for Grades 6–9 from the Creators of Shared Waters
Built on the same research-based, phenomenon-driven approach as the nationally recognized Shared Waters curriculum, Salty Streams and Safer Streets extends watershed education into grades 6–9 through a locally relevant investigation of one of today’s important environmental challenges: balancing winter road safety with the health of our freshwater ecosystems.
Designed specifically for Intermediate Unit consultants, informal environmental education organizations, and other professional development providers, this full-day workshop prepares participants to confidently facilitate professional learning and support implementation of this new curriculum throughout their region.
Participants will:
- Experience key investigations from the free 11-lesson curriculum.
- Explore instructional resources and implementation strategies.
- Learn how the curriculum supports the Pennsylvania STEELS Standards, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), and the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) framework.
- Receive the tools and resources needed to train and support classroom teachers.
Students investigate the driving question: How can we balance winter road safety with the health of our watershed?
Through hands-on investigations, outdoor learning, water quality monitoring, geospatial technologies, systems thinking, and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER), students gather and synthesize evidence before designing and implementing meaningful watershed action projects.
Whether your region is already implementing Shared Waters or you are looking to expand watershed education opportunities for middle school educators, this workshop will prepare you to bring Salty Streams and Safer Streets to teachers across your service area.
