Science Today for Water Tomorrow
Protecting Freshwater Systems Through Trusted Science and Action
Billions of dollars are invested annually to restore ecosystems, improve water quality, and protect communities from flooding and pollution.
For nearly six decades, Stroud Water Research Center has produced the trusted science needed to determine what works, to what degree, and how long it takes.
Who Are We?

The Stroud Center is the world’s only independent nonprofit research center dedicated solely to freshwater ecosystems.

The Stroud Center advances knowledge and stewardship of freshwater systems through global research, watershed restoration, and education.

The Stroud Center helps communities, policymakers, landowners, and scientists make smarter decisions to protect clean fresh water.

From Freshwater Science to Real-World Solutions
The Stroud Center integrates scientific discovery, watershed restoration, and long-term monitoring to generate practical solutions for freshwater protection.

By integrating science with implementation, the Stroud Center ensures freshwater solutions are evidence-based, scalable, and continuously improving.
Freshwater Science Impact by the Numbers
The Stroud Center’s science reaches far beyond the laboratory, improving watersheds, informing policy, and empowering communities.

Research sites studied

Peer-reviewed research papers published

Community (aka citizen) scientists mobilized

Partner organizations collaborating

Acres of riparian land reforested

Conservation practices installed

Acres of improved soil health practices
These efforts improve water quality and strengthen freshwater ecosystems.

Informing Policies That Protect Water
The Stroud Center shares its knowledge and data with policymakers and decision-makers working to protect freshwater resources.

Informing policy ensures that decisions affecting our water, ecosystems, and communities are grounded in sound science, leading to more effective, equitable, and sustainable outcomes.
Global Science, Local Impact
Water connects ecosystems, economies, and communities across borders.

We conduct research and education programs across the United States and around the world, helping communities monitor and protect their freshwater resources.
Science That Protects Biodiversity
Freshwater ecosystems support extraordinary biodiversity.

By restoring streams and protecting watersheds, we help create conditions where aquatic life can recover and thrive.

Accountability and Stewardship
As an independent nonprofit research institution, the Stroud Center is committed to transparency and responsible stewardship of philanthropic support. Our annual operating budget is $11M, with 90% directed to programs and 10% supporting administration and fundraising.
The Stroud Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization registered with the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations. We hold the highest transparency rating from Candid/GuideStar, reflecting our commitment to accountability and effective use of resources. EIN 52-2081073
