The past few months have been filled with events, and we wanted to take a moment to recap the activities, sponsors, and supporters who made it all possible!

Learning About Flooding Issues and Algal Blooms

Attendees were treated to free public lectures in May and June covering topics related to clean fresh water. The Joan and Dick Stroud Memorial Lecture speaker, Tim Palmer, shared photographs and stories about the flooding issues that are becoming more prevalent throughout the United States. Fresh off the annual Society for Freshwater Science conference (held in Philadelphia this year), we hosted visiting scientist Laura Johnson, Ph.D., who spoke about algal blooms, why they are happening, and why we should care.

Spreading the Word About Buffers and Bees

We celebrated Lancaster Water Week with a series of events throughout Lancaster County. Watershed Restoration Coordinator Lamonte Garber gave a tour of the streamside forest and pollinator garden planted with partnering organizations at Overlook Park in Manheim Township. Attendees then headed to the Manheim Township Public Library where Associate Research Scientist Marc Peipoch, Ph.D., spoke about stream health from an ecosystems perspective.

Stroud Water Research Center staff also gave tours and presentations and interacted with families at Family Farm Days at Oregon Dairy. Oregon Dairy is a farm in Lititz, Pa. that we’ve worked with to help install streamside forests.

An Exciting Golf Outing

In the middle of the lectures and outreach, we hosted the 9th annual Fore Fresh Water Golf Invitational at Bidermann Golf Course. This popular event, which sold out again this year, raises important funds to help the Stroud Center continue its work. After a threat of rain, golfers enjoyed a gorgeous May day of comradery and golf on a beautiful course. There was lots of excitement around a hole-in-one (the first one at our golf outing!) and the great silent auction items donated by local businesses. We are grateful to the many sponsors, donors, and attendees who made this event a success. Reach out to learn about sponsorship opportunities for the 10th annual golf outing on May 19, 2025!

Save These Dates

Coming up next, join us on August 1 in Lancaster, Pa. to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the publication of Dr. Ruth Patrick’s study on the Conestoga River, or on September 19 to honor our 2024 Stroud Award for Freshwater Excellence Recipient, Paul Greenberg, during The Water’s Edge gala.
