Become an Explorer of the Brandywine Watershed with First State National Historical Park and Stroud Water Research Center!

First State National Historical Park (NHP), a hidden treasure of the Brandywine River watershed located along the Pennsylvania and Delaware borders, offers a myriad of nature-based, historical, and cultural experiences to explore virtually or in person.

In fall 2020, as a partnership between the Stroud Center and First State NHP, we created a series of hands-on, minds-on events to engage middle and high school students in on-the-water STEM education, recreation, and stewardship programs. Due to pandemic safety concerns, in-person stream studies were turned into three engaging and fun park “challenges” that included a kit, hands-on activities, video conferencing with a park ranger, and National Park Service certificates and patches!

Learn how our team navigated these challenges and how you can use the same successful model in your lessons and activities. In this mini-professional development session you will also:

  • Virtually walk through the park with First State NHP park rangers.
  • Meet park rangers and Stroud Center staff and learn about our program offerings to students and educators.
  • Experience some of our park challenge kit activities and field notebooks and learn how you can recreate them.
  • Learn about our upcoming canoe program for educators on Saturday, May 8, that features the Brandywine River and First State NHP!
