Watershed Restoration Volunteer Day
September 30, 2017 , 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM EDT
- When: Saturday, September 30, 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Where: Stroud Water Research Center
- What to bring/wear: Long pants, long-sleeved shirt, gloves, a hat if sunny, water and a snack.
Volunteers will help measure trees and record data from an experiment this spring. You will be taught how to identify tree species. The purpose of the study is to see which method of using herbicide resulted in more tree regeneration. This study will directly lead to learning best management practices (BMPs) for regenerating forestlands around streams and wetlands. BMPs will be taught for suburban and rural areas, including farms.
This study is part of a federal grant that resulted from the devastation that followed Hurricane Sandy. Hurricanes and other extreme water events teach us that we need our headwaters and small first order streams to absorb water and connect with the floodplain in order to reduce the force and rate of water discharge during storms.
