As we write this, it’s still winter at Stroud Water Research Center’s home base in Pennsylvania, and we’re pleased concerns about road salt contaminating waterways are receiving much-needed attention. With help from Penn State Master Watershed Stewards, we and our Delaware River Watershed partners have collected data showing road salt is in streams — not just in the winter, but year-round. Data even suggest it’s in the groundwater too.
Senior Research Scientist John Jackson recently spoke with Studio 2 hosts, Avi Wolfman-Arent and Cherri Gregg, about the issue. Studio 2 is a production of WHYY, Philadelphia’s NPR station. Listen here. (Road salt portion begins at 9:28.)
