Girl Scout Cadette Canoeing Program: Think Like a Citizen Scientist Award

A troop of Girl Scouts in five red canoes on a lake.
  • When: Saturday, June 4, 2022, 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Please arrive EARLY to find parking and locate the group; weekends at the boat launch can be very busy.
  • Where: Marsh Creek State Park Boat Launch Western Side, Marsh Creek Park, Downingtown, PA 19335.
  • Who: Girl Scout Cadettes entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grade during the 2022-23 school year.
  • Cost: FREE for youth participants and adult chaperones thanks to grant funding from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Registration is REQUIRED for both youth and their adult chaperones. Walk-in participants are not permitted due to COVID-19 safety and a limited number of canoeing seats.

Girl Scout Cadettes (grades 6-8), join Stroud Water Research Center for a discovery-based, on-the-water canoeing adventure on a reservoir teeming with aquatic life! Earn requirements for your Think Like a Citizen Scientist Award (TLACS) while paddling the lake at the beautiful Marsh Creek State Park, exploring freshwater habitats essential to all life, diving into shoreline water chemistry experiments, collecting real citizen science data, and becoming an empowered protector of your watershed.

4-hour program duration includes paddling safety instruction, loading/unloading boats, shoreline stops, as well as on-the-water canoeing time. All essential canoeing equipment, including canoes, life jackets, paddles, First Aid Kits, and dry bags, will be provided. All participants receive a free Stroud Center Education Programs fun patch, but the TLACS Award Badge itself is NOT included and should be purchased separately by participants through their local Girl Scout Council. Before or following the program, participants are welcome to picnic or hike along the park’s vast trail network throughout forests, fields, and wetlands.

NOTE: This program only earns requirements for the Think Like a Citizen Scientist Award, one of two components of the Think Like a Citizen Scientist STEM Journey. To earn their full Journey, participants are encouraged to complete the second part of the Journey (the Take Action Award) after their program and independent of the Stroud Center.

Required Waiver of Liability

Prior to their program, registrants will be emailed more details on what to wear, program expectations, and a REQUIRED Waiver of Liability form. To participate in the program, all registrants of all ages (Scout youth and adult chaperones) must sign and submit the Waiver of Liability via email or in person by the day of their program.

COVID-19 Safety Protocols

  • Program will take place entirely outdoors except for limited access to porta-potties at the launch site.

This may shift to a requirement based on COVID-19 surges in the best interest and safety of all participants. Registrants will be alerted to any changes to masking requirements by email.
  • Participants should bring their own face mask with proper fit (over the nose, chin, and cheeks) for use if requested.
  • Participants are asked to maintain 6 feet of physical distancing whenever possible.
  • Participants are asked not to attend the program if feeling any combination of atypical symptoms, including but not limited to fatigue, coughing, sore throat, fever, chills, etc.
